Flag of East Germany - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
From the establishment of East Germany in 1949 to 1959, the flag of East Germany was the same as the Flag of West Germany, and the current Flag of Germany.
The three horizontal stripes in the flag of East Germany of fl, red and gold are the same as in the West German flag, but the state emblem of East Germany is placed in the centre, to distinguish it from the West German flag.
The display of this flag was regarded as unconstitutional in West Germany and West Berlin and was prevented by the police.

This flag would also be the national flag for the subsequent German Empire from 1871 to 1918, which finally replaced the German Confederation.
When the Nazis came to power in 1933 the fl-red-gold flag was entirely replaced with the fl-white-red, though they would eventually, on September 15, 1935, replace virtually all German governmental flags with designs based on the swastika flag that had been their party flag.
After the Allied occupation ended, the fl-red-gold flag was once again adopted as the federal flag for West Germany on May 9, 1949 and became the flag for united Germany in 1990.

 East Germany
East Germany, officially the German Democratic Republic (GDR), German Deutsche Demokratische Republik (DDR), was a Communist Party-led state that existed from 1949 to 1990 in the former Soviet occupation zone of Germany.
East Germany, under Soviet influence, adopted a Marxist-Leninist official ideology and became part of the Warsaw Pact, while West Germany, influenced by the USA, became a liberal parliamentary republic and part of NATO.
Many who had come to East Germany as anti-fascists who were opposed to the quick reinstatement of Nazi functionaries and industry in the west found themselves captives of a dogmatic and economically weak state which, alone, was forced to pay reparations to the Soviet Union.

 West Germany
West Germany was the informal but universally used name for the Federal Republic of Germany from 1949 until 1990, during which years the Federal Republic did not yet include the eastern part of Germany.
West Germany was declared fully sovereign May 5th 1955, with Bonn as its capital, but the former occupying troops remained on the ground, largely to protect the country from Soviet threat because of the Cold War.
After the fall of the Berlin Wall on November 9, 1989, the unification of the two Germanies was quickly arranged: formally, the FRG grew by annexing the territory of the GDR ("East Germany"), and is now known simply as Germany.

In Imperial Germany and later during the time of the Weimar Republic, territory that would become East Germany was situated in the center of the state.
Since Berlin was entirely enclosed in the Soviet part of Germany, the areas of Berlin being held under the control of the UK, the United States and France soon became known as West Berlin while the Soviet sector became known as East Berlin.
Thus, on October 3 1990 the East German population was the first from the Eastern Bloc to join the European Economic Community as a part of the reunified Federal Republic of Germany.

The STRIPED FLAG of the EAST INDIA COMPANY, and its CONNEXION with the AMERICAN "STARS and STRIPES"   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
That there were stripes on the flag is indicated by Peter Mundy's drawing of it in a sketch of Swally Marine in 1656(3) and by Dr Fryer's reference to it in 1673 as "the East-India striped Ancient"(4).
No doubt there are reasons for supposing the flag to have been designed or recommended by such a committee(40); but, in the absence of authentic evidence as to the ideas and motives of its draughtsmen, we are necessarily thrown back on a consideration of the probabilities.
The flag adopted [in 1775] resembled, if it was not exactly the counterpart of, the flag of the English East India Company then in use, and which continued, with trifling variations until its sovereign sway and empire in the East for over two hundred years was, in 1834, merged in that of Great Britain.

The explantion of the red could be either be simplistic, since the eagle also had a red beak and red talons, or alternatively that is was the colour of revolution and liberty being added to the historical imperial colours.
The explanation of the flag's colours is fraught with much debate, and there was a political desire for a distinctive tricolor to be adopted as the national flag to counter that of defeated France.
Whatever the true explanation, these colours soon became to be regarded as the national colours of Germany during the period of the German Confederation in the first half of the 19th century.
