Groningen is a province in the North of the Netherlands.
Proposal for a flag according to the arms by Van der Laars in 1913 in Van der Laars [laa13]: I and IV City of Groningen, II and III Ommelanden.
In 1913 Van der Laars in Van der Laars [laa13] proposed as provincial flag the flag of the Ommelanden with the central stripe changed to green to represent the city of Groningen.

The painting showed the vessel flying the Dutch national flag (not an ensign) at the stern, and further forward (not at the bow) she is flying a flag which I didn't recognise and cannot find on FOTW-ws.
If the ship is from Groningen one would expect a member of De Groninger Eendracht, but then the flag would have been white, and the number would have been preceded with "Gr".

I've borrowed the crown from José Alegrias - the stripes are conic, not straight, see the club's website, where we also read that the club was founded 26 May 1848, and has at present 1000 members.
De Hunze, Groningen: this was never been a student's club, and was never part of the Gyas rowing club; it is still going strong, as can be seen on its homepage.
It was founded in 1886; at its centenary celebrations it was granted the title "Koninklijk" (royal) and a crown, which has been put on the canton on top of the blue cross.

It might be one thing if these "anti-American" Americans, or whoever, were burning American flags, say, which would at least poise a matter for debate.
It would at least suggests a pretty anti-America-as-an-idea kind of sentiment, though it would be practical to ask the one with the match what exactly they mean to say about it.
It might be worthwhile criticizing the symbolism entailed in the act, or their chosen means for communication, but criticizing somebody who has pointed criticisms to offer for simply having expressed their criticism...

Since the middle of the 19th century the flag is used by the Fryske Biweging, and was accepted by the Deputed States (Provincial Legislature) in 1897.
During the festivities of the 40th and 50th reigning jubilee of Queen Wilhelmina in 1938 and 1948 it was used by each municipality with the municipal arms in the canton.
