The Republic of Kiribati is an island nation located in the central tropical Pacific Ocean.
Kiribati was inhabited by a single Micronesian ethnic group that spoke the same Oceanic language for 2,000 years before coming into contact with Europeans.
In 1943, the Battle of Tarawa was fought at Kiribati's capital Tarawa.

The flag is the banner of the arms that was given to Gilbert and Ellice Islands in 1937.
"Kiribati" is pronounced Kirribarce (accent on the first syllable), and is a rendering into an Oceanic language form of the English name Gilberts (the shorthand form of the Gilbert Islands' name).
The rising sun is the tropical sun as Kiribati lies astride the Equator.

The second flag for Ocean Island I know of is a field of medium blue, with a white central disc.
The Banabans on Rabi island fly the Fiji flag and in Banaba fly the Kiribati flag for all official occasions.
So this would be where you have probably found information on proposed flags etc. The problem is - that the issue of our relationship with the Kiribati Government is very sensitive and it is only over the past year or two that we are now trying to work together for the betterment of our people.

The islands were administered (1892-1916) with the Ellice Islands as a British protectorate that became (1916) the British Gilbert and Ellice Islands colony.
They gained self-rule in 1971, and, after the Ellice Islands gained (1978) independence as Tuvalu, the remaining islands were granted independence (1979) as Kiribati.
In 1995, Kiribati moved the international date line to the eastern border of the sprawling island nation so that it would no longer be divided by the date line.
