The flag of (A mountainous landlocked communist state in southeastern Asia; achieved independence from France in 1949) Laos was adopted on December 2, 1975.
The flag consists of three horizontal strips, middle blue strip is twice the height of the top and bottom red stripes.
The red color in the flag represents the blood shed in the struggle for independence, the blue color symbolizes the wealth of the country.

The Lao People's Democratic Republic is a landlocked country in Southeast Asia, bordered by Myanmar (commonly known in the West as Burma) and the People's Republic of China to the northwest, Vietnam to the east, Cambodia to the south, and Thailand to the west.
The Early History of Laos was dominated by the wider Nanzhao kingdom, which was succeeded in the 14th century by the local kingdom of Lan Xang that lasted until its decline in the 18th century, after which Thailand assumed control of the separate Principality that remained.
Laos is a landlocked country in Southeast Asia and the thickly forested landscape consists mostly of rugged mountains, the highest of which is Phou Bia at 2,817 m, with some plains and plateaus.

The flag was adopted on September 28, 1917.
Officially the first flag was created in 1855 by King Mongkut (Rama IV), showing a white elephant (a royal symbol) on red ground, as the plain colored flag was not distinct enough for international relations.
In 1916 the flag was changed to the current design, but with the middle color being the same red as the outer stripe.

The current flag was adopted in 1975 and was the flag of the Pathet Lao.
I recently read the book, "The Politics of Ritual and Remembrance: Laos Since 1975" (which is quite interesting despite the apparently boring title.) In it there is a long footnote about the current flag of Laos and the previous one.
The Lao Issara wanted a national flag that would have no royal symbol on it to be separate from the royal flag (as Thailand had done.) The design they choose was the current Lao flag, though I don't know if they ever officially made it the flag of Laos.
