The principal institutions of the Republic of Madagascar are a presidency, a parliament (National Assembly and Senate), a prime ministry and cabinet, and an independent judiciary.
Madagascar developed a recovery plan in collaboration with the private sector and donors and presented it at a "Friends of Madagascar" conference organized by the World Bank in Paris in July 2002.
Madagascar's population is predominantly of mixed Asian and African origin, though those who are visibly Asian in appearance and culture are the minority, found in the highland regions.

The flag of Madagascar was adopted on October 14, 1958, two years before independence, as Madagascar prepared for a referendum on its status in the French Community.
They were used in the flag of the last Merina monarch, Queen Ranavalona III.
Green was the color of the Hova, the prominent class of peasant commoners, that played an important role in anti-French agitation and the independence movement.

Its national emblem is the white, red, green tricolor flag, made of three rectangular stripes of equal dimensions, the first being white and placed vertically along the hoist, the two other ones being placed horizontally, the upper one red and the lower one green.
The flag is a horizontal blue-white-red triband, with a red crescent facing the fly and shifted to the hoist in the white band.
During this period, Madagascar was a de facto protectorate (not formally recognized by England for instance) although de jure a kingdom.

The flag of RENAMO (Resistëncia Nacional Moçambicana, the opposition party / army that controls some parts of the country) is horizontal 5:7 blue over red bicolor, with a large (5/7 hoist diameter) white circle placed at the same distance from the hoist and the top and bottom borders.
Above the table are two small flags: one of the state of Mozambique, the other having a vertical white in the hoist third, and the rest divided horizontally red over fl (similar in arrangement to the flag of Madagascar).
