Newfoundland and Labrador Ponders Replacing its Provincial Flag
Recently a grassroots movement has been underway in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador to replace the existing provincial flag, adopted in 1980, with one that has been unofficially flown in the province since the 1800’s.
This older standard was never officially adopted as a provincial flag in the province, however it has been flown by some for decades and in recent years has begun to make such a major comeback that many are now referring to it as the "unofficial NL flag".
Neither is it clear what the reaction will be from the majority of residents in the Labrador portion of the province, which itself has an unofficial flag that is dear to the hearts of many in that portion of the province.

Although the pink flag with its tree apparently initially represented all islanders, when a modified version of it was adopted by the Native's Society in the late 1830s, it began to be perceived as the symbol of the English Protestant portion of the community.
Thus was born the pink, white and green tricolour of Newfoundland, a flag which quickly gained prominent social and commercial and governmental use throughout the island.
Submitted to the Newfoundland House of Assembly was a proposal for a provincial flag in the form of a white ensign with the Union Flag in the canton, and the shield from the arms of Newfoundland on the fly.

Newfoundland and Labrador has long counted on these so-called equalization payments, to help deal with the harsh circumstances of human life on "The Rock," now that it has far too many people to be supported just by what remains of the historic cod fisheries.
To many Newfoundlanders (and other affected Canadians), this apparently seems like withdrawing life support just as the patient is starting to recover — in such a way as to ensure that the patient never will recover properly, and will always have to stay in the hospital.
Some Newfoundland judges have apparently suggested that it is unseemly for the rule of law to become too involved in such mere political sport.
