Salt Lake City was used in evaluating the effects on surface vessels during the initial test with an aerial burst on 1 July, and during the second test with a subsurface burst on the 25th.

The announcement of the new plan, made by IOC Director General Francois Carrard, underscored the emotion attached to the flag and the difficulties of managing a sports event that also is one of the world's largest political stages.

 The white flag with five interlocked rings, symbol of the Games since 1952, was passed to Salt Lake City Mayor Deedee Corradini during closing ceremonies of the 1998 Winter Games on Sunday.
 Salt Lake's celebration was already getting underway Sunday evening, with a party at the Delta Center featuring winter sports demonstrations, entertainment, fireworks and a replay of the Nagano closing ceremonies on the arena's Jumbotron.
 The Salt Lake Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Chamber of Commerce sponsored that party and hoped to sell 3,000 pins commemorating the day the flag was passed to Salt Lake City.

But when the city's administration finally lowered the U.S. flag to half-staff Friday, it kept the Salt Lake City flag at full-staff - a serious breach of flag etiquette because no flag should be higher than the American flag.
Several neighbors of the Salt Lake County-owned Meadowbrook Golf Course in Murray have called the county to find out more about plans to reconstruct a smaller course at the site and sell the surplus land to a developer for a housing project.
