The flag was approved at Columbia 10 Dec 1836 and was in use as a naval flag as late as 1839.
A simplification of the Zavala flag, the Burnet Lone Star flag, sometimes referred to as the second official flag of the Texas Republic, was essentially the left part of the Burnet naval flag with a gold star and the Zavala flag with the white star colored gold without the lettering around the star.
In addition to the Burnet naval flag and the Burnet second flag of the Republic, the earliest surviving replica of the contemporary banner is from the Sink's scrapbook of the 1840's.

  The Six Flags of Texas
This flag consisted of a blue perpendicular stripe of the width of one-third of the whole length of the flag with a white star of five points in the center thereof, and two horizontal stripes of equal breadth, the upper stripe white, the lower red, of the length of two-thirds of the whole flag.
The Texas flag should be on the marching left in a procession in which the flag of the United States is carried; it's staff should be behind the staff of the flag of the United States when the two are displayed with crossed staffs.
A pledge to the Texas flag was adopted by the 43rd Legislature and from 1933 until 1965 that pledge was used.

This was merely due to the fact that Texas was first created as an independent republic in March of 1836 and the "Lone Star Flag" as it became known was the final adopted flag of the Republic of Texas.
With the secession of Texas in 1861 from a union it had so joyfully entered in 1845, it is a bit surprising that the Lone Star state flag was not taken up by many of the forming state units who instead exhibited a wide variety of independent flag designs.
It might also be noted that, as a result of the great immigration into Texas in the period between 1845 and 1861, a large percentage of the 1861 population were not in Texas at the end of the Republic in 1845.
