Republic of China - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Republic of China was in the United Nations as one of its founding members and held China's seat on the Security Council until 1971, when it was expelled by General Assembly Resolution 2758 and replaced in all UN organs with the government of the People's Republic of China.
The Republic of China was recognized as the sole legitimate government of both Mainland China and Taiwan by the UN and many Western nations until the 1970s.
The Republic of China is a multiparty democratic state that is effectively composed of the island groups of Taiwan, the Pescadores, Quemoy, and Matsu.

Taiwan independence - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The movement is internationally significant because a formal declaration of independence will lead to a military confrontation not only between the People's Republic of China and Taiwan, but could also provoke the intervention from the United States and Japan in defense of their protectorate.
Between 1949 and 1991, the official position of the ROC government on Taiwan was that it was the legitimate government of all of China and used this position as justification for authoritarian measures such as the refusal to vacate the seats held by delegates elected on the mainland in 1947 for the Legislative Yuan.
This involves removing the name of China from official and unofficial items in Taiwan, rewriting history books to focus exclusively on Taiwan as a central entity, promoting the use of the Taiwanese language, reducing economic links with the PRC, and in general thinking of Taiwan as a separate entity from any notion of China.

Blue Sky with a White Sun - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The flag and the KMT party emblem made the news in during the ROC legislative elections of 2004, when President Chen Shui-bian suggested that the Kuomintang's flag and party emblem violated the ROC's National Emblem Law and copyright laws for being too similar to the national emblem of the Republic of China.
The Blue Sky with a White Sun (Chinese: 青天白日; pinyin: qīng tīan bái rì) serves as the design for the party flag and emblem of the Kuomintang, the canton of the flag of the Republic of China, the national emblem of the Republic of China, and as the naval jack of the ROC Navy.
This officially became the national flag in 1928, and continued to serve as the naval ensign; the "Blue Sky with a White Sun" flag was adopted as the naval jack at the same time.

Twenty flags of this design were then made in secret by a local tailor shop owned by the Zhao family (whether this Zhao family was related to the Zhao brothers is not clear).

Flag of the Republic of China
Flying the flag of the ROC in mainland China is officially banned (although publication of the flag ''in a historical context'' is not forbidden), and, while flying the flag of the PRC in Taiwan is no longer officially banned, it would almost certainly bring a bad social reaction.
This is not only because of its association with mainland China but also because the flag contains design elements of the KMT party flag.
Its use is opposed by the People's Republic of China (PRC) because it suggests the continued existence of the ROC, which the PRC regards as defunct and to have been succeeded by the PRC in the Chinese Civil WarCommunist revolution/.
