The flageolet differed from the recorder in that it had four finger-holes in front and two thumb-holes at the back instead of seven finger-holes in front and one thumb-hole at the back.
The instrument retained its popularity until the beginning of the T9th century, when Bainbridge constructed double and triple flageolets.~ The three tubes were bored parallel through one piece of wood communicating near the mouthpiece which was common to all three.

 BBC - h2g2 - Flageolets - A301852
The flageolet was a type of duct flute used as either a decoy, because of its bird-like tones; or as a folk instrument, accompanying singers or dancers.
The flageolet was popular not only as an instrument played by amateurs but was also connected to a new dance that had recently become popular: the Quadrille.
The flageolet was used to accompany this dance not only because its high-pitched tones carried easily, but also because it was easily portable and dancing masters could carry it when going to give lessons.

Flageolets are mostly played by all fingers except the thumb.
Recall, when you play a natural flageolet on the XII fret, you get a note which is an octave higher than the base note of the string.
You play flageolets with the accompaniment of the thumb of the right hand, it plucks the bass strings at the same time when the forefinger and the annulary do their job - plucking flageolets!

And some of the nicer flageolets have metal rings and a couple of keys.
