The flag was originally the official flag of the nation during its short independence following World War I.

The national flag of Wales is The Red Dragon (Welsh: Y Ddraig Goch).
The flag was granted official status in 1959, and is based on an old royal badge used by English and British monarchs since the Tudor dynasty: on a mount vert a dragon gules.
The green and white stripes of the flag were additions by the House of Tudor, the Welsh dynasty that held the English throne from 1485 to 1603 (green and white are also the colours of the leek, another national emblem of Wales).

The flag of Fiji was adopted on October 10, 1970.
It is a defaced sky-blue "Blue Ensign" (the actual Blue Ensign version of the flag is the Government ensign).
The current flag is very similar to the colonial ensign used prior to independence, the main differences being the latter used a darker shade of blue and displayed the entire Fijian coat of arms as opposed the just the shield.

Other dependent territories (colonies) remained outside the trusteeship system but came under the jurisdiction of chapter 11 of the Charter of the United Nations, obligating members responsible for dependencies to promote the welfare of their inhabitants.
The trusteeship system was supervised by the UN Trusteeship Council, members of the United Nations administering trust territories and an equal number of other member nations, including all permanent members of the Security Council not administering such territories.
With the independence in 1994 of Palau (in free association with the United States), the self-governing status of all territories was established and the trusteeship agreements for those territories terminated.

But Wilson's original idea, which was, as he put it, to take temporary control over certain territories in order "to build up in as short a time as possible...a political unit that can take charge of its own affairs," may be one way out of the current impasse.

For flag fans, the handover ceremony was a real bonanza thanks to the British for putting on a real pomp and circumstance show.
In the final minutes, Prince Charles delivered the message from the queen, a three man British contingent matched to the podium (there were 4 flag poles, 2 on the left were empty at the start) where on the right the British and the HK colony flags were flying.
At 11.59, "God save the Queen" was played and the Union Jack and the Hong Kong colony flags were lowered and this was followed almost immediately at 12.01 with the raising of the Chinese flags and the Hong Kong Bauhinia flags.
