Sunset Crater is a cinder cone located north of Flagstaff, Arizona in the United States.
The crater has given its name to the Sunset Crater Beardtongue (Penstemon clutei).
Damage from hikers forced the National Park Service to close a trail leading to the crater, but a short trail at the base remains.

Flagstaff beardtongues have not been documented on the project areas or within one mile, but ponderosa pine forest types may provide suitable habitat for this species.

Flagstaff pennyroyal (Hedeoma diffusum Greene) grows on Kaibab limestone soils adjacent to Flagstaff where forest restoration and fuel reduction projects are underway or planned.
A prescribed burn study conducted on the Coconino National Forest from 1989 to 1995 showed that Flagstaff pennyroyal produced larger plants with abundant flowers and had increased seedling recruitment and survivorship due to increased soil nutrients and reductions in duff, needle litter, and canopy closure.

Pendland's beardtongue (Penstemon penlandii) is a very rare species in the snapdragon family (Scrophulariaceae) that occurs in only one county in central Colorado.
We studied the reproductive biology and pollinators of Penland's beardtongue to determine if pollinators are required for fruit set, and to learn what those pollinators might be.
If Penland's beardtongue is to be preserved then its pollinators must also be encouraged to thrive.

The threatened Uinta Basin hookless cactus (Sclerocactus glaucus) is found on the north edge, and in the northeast is the endangered toadflax cress (Glaucocarpum suffrutescens).
The Flagstaff Limestone of the Wasatch Group is found at higher elevations with colorful outcrops reminiscent of those in the same formation in Bryce Canyon National Park.
A fifth of the unit is covered by Douglas fir forest and three-fifths by pinyon-juniper, Douglas fir, aspen, and mountain shrubs, reflecting relatively high elevation and precipitation compared to most Utah BLM lands outside the Book Cliffs.

Meanwhile Her Indoors has decided that the blue flowers in Wednesday's desert blooms feature, which the British contingent thought might be a vetch, is actually sagebrush in bloom.
Our UK visitor avers that the orange bloom in the same feature is not Indian paintbrush, but more probably a member of the Penstemon family (Beardtongue).
