  Flamborough Head - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Flamborough Head is a seven mile (≈11.3 km) long promontory on the Yorkshire coast of England, between the Filey and Bridlington bays of the North Sea.
It is a chalk headland, and the resistance it offers to coastal erosion may be contrasted with the low coast of Holderness to the south.
When the winds are in the east, many birders watch for seabirds from below the lighthouse, or later in the autumn comb the hedges and valleys for landbird migrants.

The name Flamborough was first thought to be derived from it being the place of the flame, but in the domesday book the word is spelt 'Flaneberg', possibly from the Saxon 'Flaen' meaning a dart, which the shape of the headland resembles.
In 1940 the Flamborough Lighthouse was electrified and further modifications took place in 1974.
Flamborough Lighthouse was automated in early 1996, the keepers leaving on 8th May. The existing aids to navigation were retained with standard Trinity House equipment replacing the lampchanger and optic drive.
