Flame retardants (EHC 192, 1997) (via CobWeb/3.1 planetlab2.cs.umd.edu)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
The flame- retarding effect is due, in all probability, to the oxidation of elemental phosphorus during the combustion process to phosphoric acid or phosphorus pentoxide.
Flame retardancy is improved by flame retardants that cause the formation of a surface film of low thermal conductivity and/or high reflectivity, which reduces the rate of heating.
Since flame retardants are often processed into polymers at elevated temperatures, consideration of the stability of the material at the temperature inherent to the polymer processing is needed, as well as on whether or not the material volatilizes at that temperature or during use.

 Flame Retardants
Flame Retardants do not prevent ignition and burning, however successfully treated materials will not sustain a flame on their own.
A piece of scenery treated with flame retardant may burn while a source of flame is held in contact with it.
When testing a material for flame retardant properties, make sure that you have taken all of the appropriate precautions including conducting the test away from other possible flammible materials, having fire extinguishing equipment ready, etc. When possible, it is advisable to have a trained and certified professional conduct the testing.

Flame retardants can be added so some materials in order to achieve the necessary safety level (i.e., pass the relevant fire test) thus enabling their use to be conform to regulations and to offer the required level of fire safety to the public.
Flame retardant products have to prove their effectiveness by fulfilling the requirements of standardized fire tests.
Without fail, these tests demonstrate that the use of flame retardants inhibits ignition and reduces combustibility - particularly in the early stages of a fire, thus lengthening the potential escape time and providing additional time for corrective action to be taken.
