  Brief History of the Flanaess
In the past thousand years, the cultural landscape of the Flanaess has evolved from a lightly populated region of primitive human, demihuman and humanoid tribes to its current status: a crowded, war-torn land of civilized feudal states armed with powerful magic and armies.
Southwest of the Flanaess was the evil Suel Imperium; directly west was the Baklunish Empire.
The Aerdi tribe of Oeridians established the Kingdom of Aerdy in the far east which grew until it controlled most of the Flanaess, from Sunndi in the southeast to Ratik and Tenh in the northeast, and westward as far as what is now Furondy and Veluna.

Heavens and Oerth   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
Scholars from the Flanaess are certain that Oerik is the greatest of the Oerth's four continents, and that four great oceans surround these lands, as do four layers of the heavens, and four depths of the Underworld.
In the central Flanaess in particular, little attention is paid to skin color or racial ancestry, although there is growing tendency to regard Suel folk with suspicion (not least because of the rose of the Scarlet Brotherhood).
The lands of the Flanaess soon became acquainted with an altogether less subtle form of evil with the rise of Iuz, in the Northern Reaches loosely aligned with Furyondy.

Southwest of the Flanaess was the evil Suel Imperium, and directly to the west was the Baklunish Empire.
The Oeridian tribe of Aerdi established the Kingdom of Aerdy in the far east of the Flanaess, which then expanded until it encompassed most of the region, from Sunndi in the south to Ratik and Tenh in the north, and as far west as Veluna and Furyondy.
At the same time, people have begun to look beyond the Flanaess for new sources of lands and wealth which are desperately needed for rebuilding and to possibly ease the current border tensions.

The Guild of Wizardry still draws adherents from all parts of the Flanaess, virtually untouched as it was by the history of the recent war.
The current focus of the Sagacious Society is its total opposition towards the fractured Aerdy behemoth to the east and the restoration and preservation of the Nyrondese heritage and culture.

Measuring Up the Oerth   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
Namely, that if we assume that the scale of Darlene's Flanaess map (30 miles/hex) applies at the equator and of course, by necessity, that the scale must therefore drop trigonometrically from the equator to the poles, we find that the entire map of the Flanaess is out of scale.
An extremely viable option, then, is to "peg" the scale of the Flanaess not at the equator (itself an arbitrary decision), but at a point at which it makes most sense to do so.
Notice that the vast majority of the Flanaess (between 25 N-45 N) remains within 10% of the observed scale of 30 miles/hex, now centered around the latitude of the City of Greyhawk.
