The duo "Flanders and Swann" was composed of British actor and singer Michael Flanders (1922–1975) and composer and linguist Donald Swann (1923–1994) who joined forces to write and perform comic songs in the two-man revues At The Drop Of A Hat and At The Drop Of Another Hat.
Flanders and Swann attended the same school (Westminster School) but went their separate ways during the Second World War.
Flanders and Swann's songs are characterised by wit, gentle satire, complex rhyming schemes, and memorable choruses.

Donald Swann was born in Llanelli, Wales on September 30, 1923.
At the same time, Swann was maintaining a prolific musical output, writing the music for several operas and operettas, and setting Tolkien's poems from The Lord of the Rings to music in The Road Goes Ever On collection.
In 1992 Donald Swann was diagnosed with cancer, and he died at Trinity Hospice in South London on March 23, 1994.

Their last hat dropped in 1968 and 9 years passed before the words and music of Michael Flanders and Donald Swann were finally published.
Donald had never written down the music and played the shows extemporaneously from the lyrics; Michael thought the songs "wouldn't sound like much anyhow" taken out of the show's context, so the collection wasn't completed until two years after his death.
It went out of print in the mid 1980's and was finally re-released in 1996.

I was first introduced to Flanders and Swann properly a couple of years ago, when Jon played me "Ill Wind", their reworking of a movement from one of Mozart's horn concertos.
I wouldn't go so far as to say that it was an instant conversion - the sudden moment of clarity, the enlightenment - like the way I first came to know Pink Floyd, for example.
Although, as Jon pointed out, if Flanders and Swann missed having a slow, slightly lumbering rail service we can only wonder what they'd have thought of things today.
