The name "Flandrian" has been applied to the current sea level rise affecting the coastal regions around the globe which began approximately 18,000-19,000 years ago (Stage 1 - beginning in latest Pleistocene time and continuing progressively through Holocene to the present).
This rise in sea level is directly related to the melting of the Wisconsin (Stage 2) continental polar and mountain piedmont glaciers.
During the following Flandrian transgression, sea level rise was very rapid early in the Late Pleistocene, but the rate of sea level rise has slowed drastically during the progress of the Holocene.

Global sea level was at least 30 m below the present level about 10,000 years ago due to the large amounts of water still held on land in remnant ice sheets.
The final melting of these ice sheets, called the Flandrian transgression, caused sea levels to rise relatively quickly until about 6,000 years ago when they began to approach modern levels and the rate of rise declined significantly.
The Flandrian transgression caused the separation of Ireland from the mainland of Great Britain, and of Great Britain from continental Europe.

According to most of the geo-physical theories, Flandrian trans-gression approached its upper level in the Fourth Millennium BC, several centuries after the culmination of the Atlantic Climatic Optimum, the warmest episode of the Holocene (with a mean global temperature 1,4°C higher than today).
In the light of D. Stanley's lithostratigraphic explorations in the Nile Delta, in the Fifth Millennium BC, when the sea level was about 10 m lower than today, the Delta appears to have been dry and quite suitable for farming and livestock herding.
The subsequent discoveries of tectonic, isostatic, geoidal as well as other eustatic factors revealed geographical and temporal dis-similarity of the Holocene eustasy dynamics; in particular, different shorelines showed both an increase of the post-glacial sea levels above the modern one as well as the absence of such an uprise.

Whilst the importance of interglacial fluvial sediments cannot be overestimated for subdivision of Quaternary successions both within and beyond glaciated areas, the character of the sedimentary record at any one locality is markedly discontinuous, and shows high lateral facies variability.
Since the present interglacial period (Holocene or Flandrian) is apparently similar in most respects to those of at least the last 0.75 My, it is reasonable to seek Pleistocene analogues in Holocene floodplain sequences.

Behind the beach is Slapton Ley, a nature reserve and good example of serial or ecological succession — the process whereby open water becomes reed bed and eventually, as silt and leaf litter builds up, woodland.
The beach itself is a good example of a bar: the material that makes up the beach was pushed up by the rising sea levels during the Flandrian transgression after the last glacial period (from 10000 to 5000 years ago).
Beaches formed like this are reworked by coastal processes now but are not supplied by enough material to recreate them, should material be removed.
