  CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Jean-Hippolyte Flandrin
The second factor in Flandrin's development was the influence of Ingres, without which it is doubtful whether Flandrin would have achieved any fame.
In 1829 Flandrin, with his brother Jean-Paul (the landscape painter), went to Paris, where he became a pupil of Ingres, who conceived a paternal affection for him.
But Flandrin turned to the first centuries of the Church, and drew his inspiration from the very fathers of religious thought.

glbtq >> arts >> Flandrin, Hippolyte
Flandrin himself was devotedly religious and approached his art from a spiritual rather than secular point of view.
Flandrin himself claimed that the classical beauty of his work was born out of his knowledge of Homer, Plutarch, Tacitus, and Virgil.
Flandrin thus blends the real and the ideal, the erotic and the contemplative, a poeticized romanticism and an incongruous realism, and classicized form and pious emotion.

Flandrin's 1897 full length portrait of his brother Francois Flandrin shows a willowy aesthete standing at twilight in stylised landscape, his mauve suit only a shade or two lighter than the alle of blue trees dappled with ochre pools of afternoon sunlight.
Flandrin's fascinating sketch of Matisse's famous 'Dance‚ in the Hermitage' which is contained in a letter to his brother written in 1910, puts these ballet pictures in perspective.
We may, therefore, not be seeing Flandrin at his best, but the overall impression of the show and the adequate but somewhat pedestrian catalogue is that we are dealing here with an essentially minor painter here.

Jules Flandrin ( 1871 - 1947) was a pupil of Gustave Moreau, one of the most prominent figures in the fin -de- siecle art world, and a close member of the group which included Matisse, George Rouault, and Albert Marquet: artists who helped to shape the course of modern art.
Flandrin was a significant force amongst these innovators.
By considering Flandrin as deeply emblematic of his age, the book invites us to think about why artists like Flandrin have disappeared from histories of modern art; about identities of "avant-gardism" in a period of enormous transition; and about the larger forces which helped to create our image of early twentieth-century art.
