 Alibris: Flann OBrien
Flann O'Brien's brilliantly inventive and witty novel satires many things, including Irish literature and folklore, the nature of narrative, and Modernism itself--of which his novel is, incidentally, a fine example.
Flann O'Brien's last novel takes place in a town just south of Dublin, where the hero, young Mick Shaughnessy, encounters a mad scientist, a sergeant who believes that a man can turn into a bicycle, Saint Augustine, and James Joyce himself.
O'Brien's comic novel satirizes the "plain folk" of Ireland in the story of Bonaparte O'Coonassa, brought up on potatoes and mutton in a cabin in the west of Ireland.

 At Swim-Two-Birds
In a 1938 letter to a literary agent, Flann O'Brien described his first novel as ""a very queer affair, unbearably queer perhaps."" The book in question was At Swim-Two-Birds--and if we take queer to mean diabolically eccentric, then truer words were never spoken.
But O'Brien was also blessed with the writer's equivalent of perfect pitch, and in At Swim-Two-Birds he squeezes the maximum beauty and banality out of the English language.
Totally unique, O'Brien's creation defies the conventions, both of its day and of the present, and even the most jaded reader will be astonished at the unexpected twists the narrative takes.

 Dalkey Archive Press: Flann O'Brien
"Flann O'Brien's The Hard Life is a comic Irish novel that derives its effect from an absolutely deadpan approach, for the narrator is a small boy who, for the better part of the time, has only the foggiest notion of what he is describing.
It's possible that O'Brien is actually better than Joyce at preserving the qualities of the Irish penchant for wordplay, a convention which often strikes an American audience as outrageous.
O'Brien's talent for finding humor in the doom and despair of the Irish mindset is a marvel and a joy.

 Scriptorium - Flann O'Brien
O’Brien’s childhood has been described as happy, though somewhat insular, as the language spoken at home was not that spoken by their neighbours.
The Catholic Church still had a tight grip on the state, as seen in the debacle of the Mother and Child Scheme, an attempt to extend social care to pregnant women that was spiked by the Church on the grounds that it interfered with the institution of the family.
O’Brien’s use of Irish is masterful, and native-speaker proficiency is required to fully appreciate all the nuances.
