That was his only visit to "the sources of the Sacramento," which botanist John Torrey named as the plant's habitat when he described the species in a publication of the brand-new Smithsonian Institution.

Although no known Mexican flannelbush have burned in decades, the habitat of Mexican flannelbush is subject to human-caused fires which may occur too frequently to permit regrowth and reproduction of this chaparral species should the areas supporting the plants be burned.

On the other end of the spectrum, Pine Hill flannelbush is reason enough to go to the top of the hill; it is gorgeous and unmistakable, one shrub literally engulfs a tall fence at the edge of a transmission station.
At that time I was notified by others concerned with protecting plants that I might want to remove the links I had to the flannelbush, etc. I didn't remove anything because these plants don't grow in any other locations where a homeowner would stumble over one in their turnip patch.
