Flare Technology was a trio of ex-Sinclair employees based in Cambridge in the UK.
Founded in 1986 by Martin Brennan, Ben Cheese and John Mathieson they initially did work for Amstrad whilst developing the 8-bit technology demonstrator the Flare 1, based on the ZX Spectrum under the codename Loki.
With expertise in ASIC design they where able to sell the concept of a highly integrated custom console to Konix[?] and were commissioned to develop the Konix Multisystem.

A brief overview of different flare gas measurement technologies is presented, with emphasis on what is regarded as the flare gas measurement technology of the future; ultrasonic time-of-flight meters.
The flare systems are mainly activated due to an unexpected shut-down or when it becomes necessary to suddenly dispose rapidly large amounts of gas.
In order to achieve economical benefit of a flare gas measurement, the purpose of the measurement could be to identify points of leakage, to obtain better control with emission rates or mass balancing.

Solar Flares   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
Solar flares are often observed using filters to isolate the light emitted by hydrogen atoms in the red region of the solar spectrum (the H-alpha spectral line).
This is an example of a "two-ribbon" flare in which the flaring region appear as two bright lines threading through the area between sunspots within a sunspot group.
The flare (the bright area) lies along a section of a neutral line where the magnetic field is twisted (or sheared) to point along the neutral line instead of across it.

ABC News: More Solar Flares Blast Toward Earth
Images from the SOHO space probe — short for Solar and Heliospheric Observatory — showed a bright flare near the sun's equator on Wednesday, and another was reported by ground-based observatories today.
The flare had one surprising effect: It temporarily knocked out the gyroscopes that keep the space station oriented in orbit.
Apparently, NASA said, the energy from the flare caused the outer layers of Earth's atmosphere to thicken slightly.

Flares of this magnitude (X-class flares are all major) can damage satellites and disrupt telecommunications on Earth.
The flares are loaded with X-rays and other radiation, all of which reaches Earth moments after the eruption and can be accompanied by a shower of protons.
Many flares are accompanied by clouds of electrified gas called coronal mass ejections, which can slam Earth a day or so later.

Alberta Energy and Utilities Board | News Release 1999-07-29 (NR 99-12)
Flaring is the burning of natural gas directly to the atmosphere.
The majority of flares are of the solution gas type, and there are about now about 4,400 of these flares operating, which is a significant decrease from the 5,400 that existed in 1996.
For well-test flaring, there is an alternative called "in-line testing," whereby gas is flowed into an existing pipeline for testing purposes rather than being flared.

Governor's Pollution Prevention Award, 1998 Recipient - BP Oil Company, Toledo Refinery
Flaring is a process in which excess hydrocarbon vapors are burned, significantly reducing the environmental impact.
While minimizing flaring was a priority for both environmental and economic reasons, there was no mechanism in place for comprehensively and accurately measuring and identifying sources of hydrocarbon in the flare system prior to 1997.
The new flare flow meter system accomplishes this by identifying sources and measuring the amount of hydrocarbon entering the flare from different sources in the refinery, thus allowing better control and response to flaring events.

 THE TECHNOLOGY
The persistent use of ineffective Flare Stacks in the oil and gas industry, with the associated high costs, as a means to reduce harmful emissions into the atmosphere, has been a flawed strategy for most situations.
Flare Stacks typically attempt to convert hydrogen sulfide in "sour gas" streams into sulfur dioxide (a toxic gas) and water.
Since most of the gas streams in question contain carbon dioxide, a fire retardant, Flare Stack incineration, an archaic "technology", is at best an incomplete process and leads to no overall reduction in the toxicity of the gas stream.
