Flash (photography) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In photography, a flash is a device that produces an instantaneous flash of light (typically around 1/1000 of a second) at a Color temperature of about 5500K to help illuminate a scene.
Canon 430 EX The earliest flashes consisted of a wad of magnesium powder that was ignited by hand.
An electronic flash contains a tube filled with xenon gas, where electricity of high voltage is discharged to generate an electrical arc that emits a short flash of light.

Without the use of a fill flash, her face would have been in a deep shadow and the front shoulder and the part of her chest that is in the sun would have been the only parts illuminated well.
Without using the fill flash, we almost silhouette the model as the only parts being lit with natural light are the top of her right leg and back, and her right arm.
Bounce flashes are flash units that have the ability to angle the flash head upward in order to reflect light off of a ceiling or a reflector connected to the flash unit.

 Flash Photography
Exposure for open flash, as related to the position of the lamp or lamps, is determined according to a table.
You must move the flash lamp away from the subject until the distance is doubled, to 22 feet in this case, or you must reduce the intensity of the light from the lamp.
This is infrared flash photography or "flout" photography.

 Electronic Flash Information
For a fair comparison with a non-zoom unit, the coverage angle of the non-zoom (typically corresponding to 28mm or 35mm lenses) should be known, and the GN of the zoom flash at that focal length should be used in the comparison.
Other factors which limit working distance are limits on the sensitivity of the light meter in the flash unit or in the camera, as well as parallax problems, when the lower end of the light cone gets into the field of view of the lens at shorter distances.
Flash photography is possible with this shutter speed and with all longer ones as well.

 Flash photography
Fill flash (adding a little bit of flash so that it doesn't appear that you're using a flash) is great for daytime shooting, adding details to shadow areas and catch lights (that sparkle in the eye) in people/animal photography.
Normally a flash fires at the end of the camera's shutter sequence; with rear-curtain flash, the flash fires at the beginning, so that subject movement seems to follow the flash exposure.
Fill flash is used in outdoor situations where there is plenty of ambient (existing) light for a photograph, but you want to fill in shadow details, such as a person's face under a hat.

This is because the flash, not the sun, becomes the major source of light on the subject.
For natural fill flash, the flash is usually set to between 1/3 and 1 stop under the ambient light exposure.
Some modern flash units automatically reduce their output when they “think” they are being used as a fill-in light source.

The Super D GRAFLEX Cameras have provision for built-in synchro nization of flash lamps, through the use of a battery case, reflector and connecting cord, referred to as a flashing unit.
The length of exposure will depend primarily on the duration of the flash and in the case of SM or SF lamps (gas-filled), this will be in the neighborhood of 1/200 of a second.

All these problems are caused by one thing, the flash is too close to the camera lens, the closer the flash is to the lens the bigger the problems.
In the 'good old days' the flash was a separate item which clipped onto the top of the camera and, more importantly, could be detached from the camera.
The most common method in use at the moment is the 'pre-flash', which is usually a series of flashes fired quickly just before the shot to try to close the pupils of your subject(s) and thereby lessen the problem.

As soon as the flash unit determines that the foreground subject has been adequately lit - by this realtime measurement of reflected flash light - it cuts off the power to the flash tube and the light from the flash unit is immediately quenched.
The flash unit fires a preflash (either near-infrared light from a front-mounted secondary flash bulb or white light from the main flash bulb, depending on the flash unit and operating mode) in conjunction with the ambient light metering, in order to determine the approximate distance from the flash to the main subject.
When you’re using bounce flash (ie: when the flash unit’s head is in basically any position other than full-on straight or, with those flash heads which support it, with 7 degree downward tilt) then there is no way for the camera to know the distance the light took to reach the subject from the flash.

 Secrets of Powershot Flash Photography
The dedicated "EX" flash units are very flexible (though not all features, sadly, are available on all Powershots — though the G3, at last, seems to have complete support, as do all EOS SLRs), and permit a host of useful effects — but they're also pricey and lock you into a highly-proprietary flash system.
Some flash designs (e.g., some Canon strobes) might place it a little differently, but all of them work the same way — the (- negative) part of the hotshoe connects to the camera's hotshoe rail, and the (+ positive) pin will make contact with the large round connector at the center of the camera shoe.
When the shutter and zoom combine in those ranges, the lens will always be wide open during the manual flash exposure — yoiu may have set the camera to f/8, and it thinks it's shooting at f/8, but the lens was really still at f/2 when the strobe went off.

By using a digital camera set for a long exposure (two seconds or more) in a dark room, you can trigger the circuit to fire the flash at the sound of a balloon pop and capture an image of the event.
