		Flash Gordon is a 1980 album by British rock band Queen.
		It is the soundtrack album to the science fiction movie Flash Gordon.
		The album makes extensive use of synthesizers; prior to Queen's previous recording, The Game, the band had been keen to point out that "no synthesizers were used on this album".

		It was the only Queen album to reach the #1 position in both the United Kingdom and the United States.
		The Game was the first Queen album to use synthesizers, and the album's popularity inspired the band members to continue using them heavily for the rest of the band's career, with somewhat mixed results.
		The album's working title was "Play The Game", but Taylor voiced concern about its possible overtones of conformity, so it was changed to simply, "The Game".

		The B-side, "Football Fight", was also taken from the "Flash Gordon" album, but not remixed in any way (although it is part of a segue on the album, it's easily seperated - especially on CD).
		The music is the same as on the album, but the selection of samples used from the film is completely different.
		Not as sharp as the studio version, and obviously missing the film samples, this is more noteworthy for its oddity value than the quality of the performance.

	Flash Gordon album review
		This album version is not the same as the single version, which is a slightly altered arrangement and contains a different selection of clips from the film.
		This magnificent heroic fanfare sets the tone for the album splendidly, and is a characterful and uplifting opening, and is really the only track that could be considered for a single release.
		Of all the songs on the album, this is the most reminiscent of a traditional cinematic extravaganza soundtrack.

		Brian recorded some bits at the same time as the "Flash Gordon" which was later used and finnished under the name The Dark (Back To The Light solo album).

		"Flash" and "The Hero" - and interestingly, these two songs are both good enough to have appeared elsewhere in the Queen catalogue.
		There are all sorts of bass-lines, guitar riffs, synthesizers, movie lines and other sounds - overall the album is quite an interesting exercise - and certainly not 'bad' - it's just not the sort of album you'll want to listen to.
		There might only be two 'real songs' on Flash Gordon, but it's an album that fulfils it's purpose.

		The album does get off to a fabulous start with The Hero, using the Queen material to best over the top heroic use, but after that the score is much more variable.
		An album that mixed in the Queen songs with a proportion of original score highlights would almost certainly be terrific fun - although I must admit the more widely available album is fairly amusing with Queen's songs interspersed with gloriously tacky dialogue clips.
		Had Flash Gordon been chopped down to half an hour of the best cues from each part of the film, I'd probably be a little more generous.

		One of the wierdest misfire films to come from the king of misfires, Dino De Laurentiis, Flash Gordon traded heavily on the psychedelic imagery of Mongo, the undercurrent of kinky sexuality, its hommage to the original "Flash Gordon" serials and, of course, the music by Queen.
		Unfortunately, all of this is presented on the album buried under dialogue and effects.
		If Queen's album could be reissued without the dialogue, then much of this would become moot; enterprising film score fans could edit the score into its proper order while Queen's fans could just hear the music.

		This is an album which I don't possess, as I didn't feel that it was a studio album, but rather a soundtrack turned into an album.
		With the exception of 'Flashs Theme' and 'The Hero', the rest of the album has a lot of instrumentation as well as various sound bytes from the film 'Flash Gordon'.
		Brian May recorded some of the music which was used on his solo album 'Back to the Light' - have a listen to the track, 'The Dark' and see if you can spot elements which were recorded 12 years previous to Brians solo album.

		I currently own an old copy of Flash Gordon on DVD but the picture quality is questionable and there is no special features -well a trailer, but they all have that-.
		FLASH is great camp fun, one of the classic fun films of the 80's.
		Queen's "Flash Gordon" soundtrack was one step below medicore, with only one slight bright spot: the drum solo when the model ship flies through the colorful swirling Mongo clouds, and maybe...ok, I'll give you the 'football fight'.

		However, one thing that would have improved this album is taking out some of the boring dialouge from the film (which is entertaining- you should rent it).
		Highlights of this album are Flash's Theme, Ming's Theme, Football Fight, Arboria, VUltan's Theme, Battle Theme, Flash's Theme reprise, and The Hero.
		The only thing this album lacks is a bunch of Freddie's vocals, however when you take it as a film soundtrack it is almost perfect.

		It's very brassy and heroic, making use of the Flash Gordon theme composed by Queen - initially, Queen was hired to write the songs only and Blake wanted to interpolate them in the instrumental score, which he did in a very effective way.
		Although Flash Gordon is a first rate score, the bonus attraction on this album - Amityville 3D - is the one that I actually like the most.
		The low-key parts include a lot of solo parts for piano, female voice and flutes and the score is on very few occasions leaving the tonal writing, there is very little dissonance in the score, yet it's probably more frightening than a lot of the more experimental outings in the genre.

		The live versions which have been released use a backing track which was specially produced to open the concerts; they do not include any 'live' parts, although the track has itself been performed as a medley with other album tracks.
