  Flash suppressor@Everything2.com
A flash suppressor is a device that fits on the tip of the barrel of a gun, in the same place as a silencer.
It is a common misconception that the function of a flash suppressor is to hide the flash from the enemy; it isn't.
The point of a Flash/Sound suppressor is one, to minimize or eliminate muzzle flash both for the purpose of not blinding the operator and also to hide one's position from the adversary, and two, to make the report of firing the weapon sound distinctly different from the sound of a weapon being fired.

  Suppressor Summary
A suppressor, also commonly known as a silencer, is a device attached to a firearm to reduce the amount of noise and flash generated by firing the weapon.
Adding the mass of a suppressor to the mass of the recoiling parts means that attaching a suppressor will significantly alter the operation of the gun; in most cases, it stops the slide from unlocking at all, and effectively turns the semiautomatic pistol into a bolt action.
Suppressors are most effective to the side and rear of the shooter, so a suppressor could be used by a sniper effectively.

A flash suppressor, also known as a flash hider, flash guard, flash eliminator, or flash cone, is a device attached to a rifle or other gun that directs hot escaping gases from the barrel end.
Military flash suppressors are designed to reduce the muzzle flash from the shooter to preserve their night vision, usually by directing the incandescent gases to the sides, away from the line of sight of the shooter.
Flash hiders are often used as a muzzle brake as well by symmetrically cutting slits near the top, but not the bottom, of the hider, which then provides some down-force on firing as the gases escape upwards, thereby reducing muzzle climb, as well as dust kick up.

Flash suppressors are used on military rifles to reduce the likelihood and accuracy of any return fire.
Muzzle flash can also be controlled by using cartridges with a faster-burning powder, so that the propellant gases will already have begun to cool by the time they exit the barrel.

On the other hand, flash suppressors, and barrel shrouds were seen as 'military' features, and were on the list of features that, provided enough features were also present on the semi-automatic rifle, then the rifle was defined as illegal, if manufactured after the effective date of the ban.
Category: Firearm components A muzzle booster or recoil booster is a device affixed to the muzzle of a firearm, intended to harness the energy of the escaping propellant to augment the force of recoil on portions of the firearm.

Flash suppressors work by allowing the propellant gases to cool before dissipating.
It is commonly thought that they are used on military rifles to reduce visibility to the enemy, but the size of a device necessary to hide the muzzle flash from an enemy during the night would be prohibitive.

A flash suppressor provides the powder gases a minor extra volume in front of the muzzle to drop their pressure and temperature by expansion to be significantly less eager to ignite themselves when colliding with oxygen of the air.
The well known recoil-action Barrett M82 with model BT8 Telescopic Reflex Suppressor is almost comfortable to shoot, regarding the suppressing effect on noise and the absence of pressure shock on shooter and spotter.
Because a suppressor adds the mass of the recoil action barrel of the M82, some shooters use a stiff spiral spring seen in the photo above between the suppressor and the receiver to further soften the felt recoil.

The definition of a “flash suppressor,” as included in the proposed regulations pertaining to legislatively-defined Assault Weapons is inadequate.
It is conceivable that from the position of the target, that when used with a slow-burning powder, a conventional “flash suppressor” might actually increase the perceived flash as the large volume of burning powder is dispersed over a larger than usual area.
(Note that some flash suppressors do not port the gasses at right angles.) That is, they divert some of the gases so that they exit the barrel at right angles to the flight path common to the bullet and the majority of the incandescent gas and burning powder.

Flash Dryer is a pneumatic system primarily used to dry products requiring the removal of free moisture.
Typically, cyclones are followed by scrubbers or bag filters for final cleaning of the exhaust gases to meet current emission requirements.
Elevated drying temperatures can be used with many products since the flashing off of surface moisture instantly cools the drying gas without appreciably increasing the product temperature.
