Flashback: The Quest for Identity - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Flashback: The Quest for Identity, released just as Flashback in some countries, is an action-adventure platform game developed by Delphine Software of France, a now defunct company, and published by U.S. Gold in America and Europe, and Sunsoft in Japan.
The game began as a licensed adaptation of Francis Ford Coppola's movie The Godfather, but eventually strayed away from this theme as development proceeded.
This game has completely different gameplay and generated mixed reviews from critics that felt that it was too different from the original game.

Half-Life - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The game is set in a remote area of New Mexico at the Black Mesa Research Facility, a fictional complex that bears many similarities to both the Los Alamos National Laboratory and Area 51, during December of 200X (according to calendars in game and the Playstation 2 version's manual).
The game's protagonist is the theoretical physicist Gordon Freeman, a survivor of an experiment that goes horribly awry when an unexpected resonance cascade (an apparently completely fictitious occurrence; see also 1, 2) rips dimensional seams that devastate the facility.
The game tells the story by flowing into scripted sequences that are integrated as part of the game rather than as cut scene intermissions.

BBC - h2g2 - Flashback: The Quest For Identity - the Computer Game
Flashback was developed by Delphine Software International, creators of such classic games as Cruise for a Corpse and Future Wars, as well as Flashback's predecessor, Another World (known as Out of This World on other platforms).
The animation of the humanoid characters in the game is all taken from a process known as 'rotoscoping', where real-life actors would perform the moves required of them, and have their movements plotted on computer and converted into sprites.
Flashback was originally released for the Commodore Amiga at the end of 1992 by distributors US Gold (now a part of Eidos Interactive) under the simple title of Flashback.

The Video Game Critic's Atari Flashback 2.0 Review Page
Not only does the Flashback 2 console and controllers mimic the design of the much-loved Atari 2600 system, but twice as many games are built into it, for a respectable total of 40.
The Flashback 2 console itself measures about 5 by 8 inches, which is tiny compared to the original 2600, but still almost twice as big as the first Flashback.
At the very least, this package delivers a nice collection of classic games that can be played as they were meant to be, and most provide pure, simple fun.

My memory of most of these games is vague, but even the best of them seemed a lot more fun when I was twelve years old, spending long afternoons at the supermarket or arcade, feeding hundreds of dollars in quarters into the Asteroids machine, and playing until I was the undisputed master of the neighborhood.
A good bunch of the games in the package are buggy (Space Duel in particular - ships would disappear for no reason, leaving a lone player to shoot at himself, racking up points for the other player until the game ends...?), and others refused to play at all.
Out of the 40 games included, over a dozen will be unfamiliar to most people since they're either new titles created just for the FB2 or old ones that were never released (and the reason they weren't is because they're not fun to play).

This was accomplished by having the emulator read the contents of the emulated game's screen, but rather than displaying them on your computer's or console's screen, the context of the data was interpreted to see what was going on the screen, and corresponding changes were made in the environment rendered by the 3D engine.
The three games that were chosen in substitution were games that we hadn't been able to include in the PC version as the legal research hadn't been completed in time.
The basic premise was that, in addition to being able to play the regular games, we also would have some variation on the game (runs faster, looked different, etc.) in which you would have to earn a specific score in order to advance to the next challenge.
