The Grand River is the longest river in the U.S. state of Michigan.
Before roads, canals, and railroads, the Grand River was an important navigational route through the Lower Peninsula of Michigan, used for centuries by various Native American tribes and later by explorers and white settlers.
Grand River Avenue (or Grand River Road) was built early in the settlement of Michigan and runs from the head of navigation on the Grand to downtown Detroit.

East of Durham, the Eno is joined by the Little River and then the Flat, where it forms the Neuse River; but for the last 20 years their junction has been subsumed by the spreading waters of Falls Lake.
European settlers found the river a convenient source of hydro power and by 1752 were operating gristmills that became, in some cases, commercial centers and growing villages.
Meantime, the river has become a regional attraction, actively promoted as a visitor destination as well as a heavily-used amenity for residents of the urban areas to which it provides a distinct counterpoint.

There is also an alternate takeout on Little River Lane, which is a small dirt road off Horseshoe Rd on your way to Flat Shoals Rd. I don't mind paddling all the way to Flat Shoals Rd because there are some additional big sliding waterfalls interspersed on the remainder of the river.
The river crosses a roadbed at the put in, which forms a decent play hole at some levels.
