Stokes County is located in northwest North Carolina and is considered to be part of the Piedmont Plateau.
In 1756, Peyton Randolph and William Byrd of Virginia, and Hugh Waddell of North Carolina arranged a treaty with the Cherokee.
Rowan County divided in 1770 and formed Surry County, and in 1789 Surry County was divided to form Stokes County.

He was a justice of the peace in that county and removed to Buncombe in 1817, from which, in 1818 he was elected to the legislature and served till 1823, and removed to Macon in 1828, lived one mile from Franklin, and was elected to the legislature in 1828 and served continuously till 1833.
Yancey county is now bounded on the north by Mitchell county and the State of Tennessee; on the east by Mitchell and McDowell counties; on the south by McDowell and Madison; on the west by Madison and Buncombe counties and the Tennessee line.
This county was settled largely by emigrants from the counties east of it.

The Flat Rock and Bannertown Communities of Surry County have experienced severe problems with failed septic tanks and contaminated wells.
Because of the close proximity of the houses, which are on small lots, and the high concentration of development in a small geographic area, this problem has continued to develop.
The funds will be used to construct approximately 131,500 linear feet of water distribution and 45,700 linear feet of sewer line from the City of Mt. Airy into the Flat Rock and Bannertown communities, serving the 627 residential water users and 117 sewer users.
