 flatbow
Flatbows are usually wooden selfbows (bows made of one solid piece of wood), though composite flatbows can and have been made in ancient and modern times.
Flatbows were used by Native American tribes such as the Hupa, Karok, and Wampanoag, prehistoric ancient Europeans, some inuit tribes, Finno-Ugric nations and a number of other pre-gunpower societies for hunting and warfare because they are easily crafted, and, unlike longbows, excellent flatbows can be made from nearly any type of wood.
In a flatbow, the flat belly and back ensures that all of the most highly strained wood is a uniform distance from the neutral axis, minimizing stress and making weaker woods far less likely to fail (break or become permanently bent and lose the springiness needed in a bow).

 The Principle of Complements
A common misconception is that a flatbow must have a flat belly.
Compared to a longbow, a flatbow is a bow that has been made wider so it can be made shorter, regardless of its belly shape.
The term flatbow is simply a designation for one of three basic bow styles--flatbow, longbow and recurve (which, depending upon materials used, can be constructed as self, laminated and composite bows).

In the case of a flatbow, this amount only applies to the maximum width of the bow.

Native Americans used longbows (especially on the east coast) and flatbows (especially on the west coast), often recurved, made from various hardwood species, such as hickory.
The limbs of a flatbow have a rectangular cross-section, rather than curved or "crowned" as with a longbow.
The typical modern flatbow is made from a whitewood such as ash, hickory, hazel, or oak, with limbs about 2 inches (5 cm) wide, tapering in the last outer third of the limbs to ½-inch (1 cm) nocks.

 Bows
The Flatbow is found all over the world and is one of the oldest designs in existence, with actual relics dating back some 9,000 years.
Historically, because it is shorter, this type of bow was favored by hunters in wooded regions, by horse archers, and by warriors who used guerrilla tactics as opposed to soldiers who faced the enemy in exposed lines.
The popularity of all wooden bows declined in the '50's and 60's, but it is significant to note that the flat limb was adopted by all manufacturers of fiberglas and laminated bows and even compounds.

In Europe the latter approach was used, with yew being the wood of choice, because of its high compressive strength, light weight and elasticity.
Commoner and cheaper hard woods, like elm, oak, ash, hazel or maple are good for flatbows.
A narrow longbow with high draw-weight can be made from these woods, but it is likely to take a permanent bend (known as "set" or "following the string") and would likely be outshot by an equivalent made of yew.
