After railroad logging operations ended, the company continued using lumber flatcars, such as Car #575, to transfer lumber throughout the giant mill complex in Scotia using their two General Electric 80 ton locomotives, 101 and 102.
While the wooden portions of the flatcars had been rebuilt several times in the car shops of Pacific Lumber and the wheel sets replaced in the 1930s, the arch bar trucks remained unchanged since the early years of the company.
Pacific Lumber Flatcar #575 was purchased from PALCO by Chris Baldo in 1992 and donated to Roots of Motive Power in 1995.

Since the flatcar dosen't have much of a vertical structure to brace and stiffen it (like the tanker or gon) it falls prey to such warping pretty easily.
Just to be sure, I also decided to put a permanent load on the flatcar to replace the diving weights (...effective, but not very esthetic.) I needed something heavy.
They are not destructive to the flatcar and do enhance its looks even if they might not be all that effective against warping.

It was in the early 1950s that Southern terminal superintendents, on their own initiative, built five flatcar cabooses in New Orleans and one in Louisville using old 41'-6" flatcars.
Apparently these first Southern flatcar cabooses were successes, because in August 1955 Southern’s Hayne Shop began converting more, and they were also given their own class designation, XC.
Because the steel cabs were not built on top of the deck, a scale 17 feet of the decking has been removed and replaced with sheet styrene as a floor for the cab.
