flatfish symposium 2005   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-05)
At the first symposium a need for continuation was deemed imperative and it was decided to continue organizing an international symposium on flatfish ecology with a three years interval for as long as this need remained.
A Steering Committee is responsible for the continuity of the symposia, with respect to timing, general topics etc. and for the selection of the host and location of the next symposium.
To date the proceedings of the flatfish symposium have been published in the Journal of Sea Research and at present there is no reason to change this.

Flatfish - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Flatfish have been cited as dramatic examples of evolutionary adaptation.
The development of flatfish is thus considered to recapitulate their evolutionary history.
The asymmetric geometry of flatfish has been likened to the cubist paintings of Pablo Picasso, and is often perceived as being "imperfect", "grotesque", "strange", etc. It is likely that the asymmetry contributes to their survival by helping to disguise them on the ocean floor.

 Flatfish
Newly hatched flatfishes swim upright and are symmetrical, but a few days after hatching, one eye begins to migrate across the skull and eventually both eyes are on one side.
Flatfish with both eyes on the right side are said to be right-eyed (dextral); those with both eyes on the left side are left-eyed (sinistral).
Flatfishes are caught mainly by otter trawl, Danish seines or longlines; some are angled.

 flatfish - HighBeam Encyclopedia
The underside of the flatfish is pale and the top is colored to match the environment; some species, especially the flounders, are able to change their pigmentation.
Flatfishes are divided into two groups: the soles, families Soleidae, Cynoglossidae, and Achiridae; and the flounders (including the halibuts and others), families Bothidae and Pleuronectidae.
The European species Solea solea, a 2-ft (61-cm) flatfish found from the Mediterranean to the North Sea, is a valuable food fish, the source of filet of sole (in the United States filet of sole is usually flounder).

Flatfish - Biocrawler   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-05)
Flatfish have been cited as examples in favor of the theory of evolution.
For example, Richard Dawkins in The Blind Watchmaker, states the proposed evolutionary history as follows: "...bony fish [generally] have a marked tendency to be flattened in a vertical direction...It was natural, therefore, that when the ancestors of [flatfish] took to the sea bottom, they should have lain on one side...
In evolution this problem was solved by the lower eye 'moving' round to the upper side." The development of flatfish is thus considered to recapitulate their evolutionary history.

Flatfish include all of the flounders and soles found along the Atlantic coast of the eastern United States.
Flatfish fillets have a sweet, mild taste and should be handled carefully because of their fragile texture.
Fillets from the dark side of a flatfish may have a slightly stronger flavor and, because of a more highly developed vascular system, may lose their quality faster than fillets from the white side.

Flatfish: A Movement Activity - Science Lesson Plan, Thematic Unit, Activity, Worksheet, or Teaching Idea
Explain that flatfish hatch from eggs looking like every other fish - with one eye on each side of their head, but as they grow, their eyes migrate (move) to one side of their head.
In an adult flatfish, both eyes are on the dark (pigmented) side of the body, while the other side is eyeless and white.
As the flatfishes grow, their color and pigmentation patterns change and one eye migrates across the top of their heads to end up on the same side as the other eye.

Beginning to take on adult form, young flatfish settle to the bottom and begin to live as their parents did.
The flatfish found in Alaska waters are in one of two families, and which side they lie on is a good indication of their family.
Thus, if a flatfish is held on edge with its pelvic fins pointing down, it is a left-eyed fish if the head is facing left and the colored side and eyes are also on the left.

Responsible Fisheries - Stocks - Flatfish
Apart from Greenland halibut there are a number of flatfish stocks of importance in the Icelandic fisheries, including plaice, dab, long rough dab, lemon sole, witch and halibut.
In the early 1990s most of the flatfish stocks were considered under-utilized and only plaice was subject to a TAC, that tended to be in excess of scientific recommendations.
Fishing effort for flatfish increased markedly in the following years and TACs were imposed in 1996/97 as it became clear that the stocks were under pressure from excessive effort.

Flatfish include some of the most sought-after fish, such as the delectable Dover sole, and the most familiar, such as plaice, with its distinctive orange-spotted grey upper side.
Most flatfish have already been gutted when sold, so trimming the fish usually only involves cutting away the fins and removing the head behind the gills.
Other notable flatfish include the brill, the dab, the megrim and the curiously named witch.

Flatfish are not hot on parenting, so to ensure the next generation they spawn huge numbers of eggs, up to 150,000 in the case of the dab, half a million for the plaice, and up to two million for the flounder.

Fish belonging to the family pleuronectidae are generally "right-eyed." As larvae, all flatfish start out with bilaterally symetrical eyes (one on each side of the head).
At this point, the fish begins swimming sideways; the side toward the bottom is "blind" and light colored.

The catches from the selective flatfish trawl were compared to catches made with a conventional flatfish trawl.
The selective flatfish trawl caught more plaice and reduced the cod bycatch, particularly those smaller than the minimum landing size in the Skagerrak sea trials, compared to the conventional flatfish trawl.
Hence, this selective flatfish trawl appears to be a useful management tool to substantially reduce bycatch of cod in a directed plaice or flounder fishery.
