Flathead Lake is one of the 300 largest natural lakes in the world and is the largest natural freshwater lake in the western United States.
Flathead Lake Biological Station was established in Bigfork in 1899 by Dr. Morton J. Elrod.
Lake trout, lake whitefish and yellow perch are the most common nonnatives and have increased in abundance since 1970, whereas native species have declined.

Flathead Lake is currently described as oligomesotrophic (oligotrophic means being deficient in plant nutrients while mesotrophic means having a moderate amount of dissolved nutrients).
In spite of its renowned purity, studies at the Bio Station show that water quality of Flathead Lake has declined over the last decade due to the combined effects of increased pollution from human sources, erosion of the shoreline caused by dam operations and introduction of non-native biota (flora and fauna).
Lake trout, lake whitefish and yellow perch are the most common non-natives and have increased in abundance since 1970 whereas native species have declined.

Mysis shrimp, first noted in Flathead Lake in 1981, strip zooplankton from the upper waters of the lake and serve as food for deep water fish such as lake trout and lake whitefish.
The 1998 estimated harvest of lake trout was roughly 40,000 fish.
If lake trout harvest is too high (as measured by a declining recreational fishery) fishing regulations will be adjusted to improve the fishery as long as the action does not conflict with native trout goals.
