Fuel injected engines achieve fast idle via a valve or solenoid that is activated by the computer which monitors coolant temperature, ambient air temperature, engine speed/loads, etc..
An engine design where the valves are located in the block allowing the use of a low-profile or "flat" cylinder head.
A mechanical pump is mounted to the engine and uses a lever that reciprocates from a rotating cam (on the camshaft).

Ford Flathead engine - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ford flatheads are still hot rodded today, with a special land speed record class for flathead engines.
The Flathead was licensed to other constructors; it was used by Simca in France until 1961 for cars and even later on the Simca V8 military truck.
The fuel pump was mounted centrally atop the rear of the engine, driven by a reciprocating pushrod from a lobe on the camshaft.

 Howstuffworks "How HEMI Engines Work"
An engine like this is said to have "hemispherical heads." In a HEMI head, the spark plug is normally located at the top of the combustion chamber, and the valves open on opposite sides of the combustion chamber.
In a flathead engine, the valves are in the block, rather than in the head, and they open in a chamber beside the piston.
The head in a flathead engine is extremely simple -- it is a solid metal casting with a hole drilled in it to accept the spark plug.

Engines designed for hydraulic lifter camshafts use slotted rocker arm pedestals, for non-adjustable rockers.
While the 4-bolt main caps are found on only some of the 351C-4V engines, all 351C blocks are cast with provisions to accept the caps.
Cleveland family engines use a distributor that will physically interchange with those of the 429/460 big block.

The advantage of a flathead was simplicity -- no pushrods or rocker arms, and the head was a simple casting with a hole in it for the sparkplug.

This engine is water-cooled rather than air-cooled and its V angle is 60 degrees rather than 45.

On a Ford/Mercury flathead, the valves are not parallel with the cylinders and the angle isn't the same from side to side.
The early engines had half of the bell housing cast into the block, the distributor mounted to the front of the engine with its shaft lined up with the camshaft, and the heads had water outlets in the center.
The late engines had bell housings which were entirely bolted on, the distributor pointed up and to the right perpendicular to the camshaft, and the water outlets were on the front of the heads.

The Q&A Times - What is a flathead engine?   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-14)
The Ford flathead V8 motor initially delivered 65 hp as compared to the 40 to 50 hp of the 4 cylinder motor it replaced.
The demise of the flathead actually began in 1949 when GM introduced their overhead valve V8 in the Cadillac and Oldsmobile line of cars.
The distinct difference between the two motors is the flathead motor has its valve train in the block where an overhead valve engine has its valve train in the head itself.

This is because core shifting was not as prevalent as it was in the earlier 21 and 24 stud engines.
Flatheads normal range of engine temperature is 180-200 degrees F. Remember that plain water in a non-pressurized system boils at 202 degrees in mile-hi Denver and you can see how really close these old Fords run to boiling.
If they did, the engine would smoke so bad and, considering how long it would take to move the rings so the gaps were no longer lined up, for such an extended length of time that we’d be arrested for pollution.

All it took to transform this engine into the most feared 301-inch flathead on earth was the expertise of the hot rod purist, historian and visionary----Ron Main and the legendary talents of "Dandy" Dick, Mike and Robert Landy (Dick Landy Industries) who were responsible for engine building and testing.
The significant difference in this flathead is that the intake and exhaust valves are located side by side where the intake manifold bolts to the top of the block.
In addition to the hundreds of hours spent on the engine dyno at Dick Landy Industries, it was important to study the effects of air traveling the surface of the vehicle.

birthday   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-14)
On late model flatheads without the bellhousing cast into the block, there is a code stamped on the right rear corner of the intake gasket face of the block which will give you the manufacturing date of your flathead Ford or Mercury.
Please remember that it is possible, even likely, that the year the engine was assembled will be the year before the car's model year.
I have seen flatheads on which the date code appeared to be missing, although I suspect this is an artifact of time, rust, and/or machining.

Flathead Engine   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-14)
A flathead engine, for which another term is a "valve-in-block" engine, requires that the intake airflow make at least a 90-degree turn to enter the cylinder, and the exhaust often follows a more complicated path to leave the engine.
And an engine that has intake valves on one side and exhaust on the other, though technically still a flat-head, is commonly called a "T-head" engine.
Flatheads are no longer in common use for automobiles, although they are still used for some small-engine applications like lawnmowers.

Water pumps were moved to the more traditional location in the block where they were better able to move cool water into the block rather than the previous scheme of moving water out of the heads.

Articles - Cylinder head   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-14)
In an internal combustion engine, the cylinder head sits atop the cylinders and consists of a platform containing most part of the combustion chamber and the location of the valves and spark plugs.
A V engine usually has two cylinder heads, one at each end of the V, although Volkswagen, for instance, has recently produced a V6 where the angle between the cylinder banks is so narrow that it utilizes a single head.
The cylinder head is key to the performance of the internal combustion engine, as the shape of the combustion chamber, inlet passages and ports (and to a lesser extent the exhaust) determines a major portion of the volumetric efficiency and compression ratio of the engine.
