Flatlands is a neighborhood in the borough of Brooklyn in New York City.
Flatlands was originally a farming community where tobacco, corn, squash, and beans were grown, and oysters and clams were harvested from Jamaica Bay.
Flatlands is one of the few Brooklyn neighborhoods not served by many subway lines (the nearest stations are the 2 and 5 lines in the Flatbush Junction near Brooklyn College and the B and Q lines originating in Brighton Beach and Coney Island); city and private bus lines serve the neighborhood.

Flatlands Dutch Reformed Church, Kings Highway north of Flatbush Avenue, erected in 1848, occupies the site of the original church which was built in 1663 and rebuilt in 1794.

Resulting from this, Flatlands, known to the Dutch as Nieuw Amersfoordt, is unusually rich in local history, containing a greater bulk of early Dutch residences and farm houses dating before 1820.

 History of Brooklyn - Early and Colonial Years
Brooklyn, situated at the southern tip of Long Island, was originally inhabited by a group of American Indians who called themselves the Lenape, which means "the People." They included the Nayack and the Canarsee, who planted corn and tobacco and fished in the rivers.
As a result of diseases, such as smallpox, that were new to America; war; land deals that were not always honorable; and other factors, by the 1680s the native people had lost all claims to the rolling, heavily forested landscape.
The fighting ranged from Gravesend to Gowanus, and the Colonial Army narrowly escaped annihilation by slipping across the East River to Manhattan during a foggy night.
