This flat has the 1"x3" framing framed "on-edge." This flat takes up a few more inches in storage but is easier to attach to the flat next to it.

FLAT: A unit section of flat scenery, usually made of wood or muslin on a wooden frame.
GAUZE (GAUZE CLOTH): Flat curtain of fine mesh mosquito netting or similar fabric, either painted or unpainted, which when lit solely from the front appears to be opaque, but when lit from behind becomes transparent.
THRUST STAGE: A type of theatre in which the audience is seated on three sides of the stage.

 Pictures! A bunch of different photos
This is a value study in charcoal and chalk, to show the highlights and shadows, in order to fool the eye into thinking the image is 3D when in fact it's 2D.
In theatre, scenic painting is all about trying to make things look as real as possible from very far away.
After I did the value study I 'pounced' the paper with a tracing wheel, then transferred the image with charcoal to a 5'5' neutral toned flat (basically, muslin over a wood frame, the way that theatre flats are often made) which gave me an outline.
