Flautist - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A flautist or flutist is a musician who plays the flute.
The choice of "flautist" (from the Italian flautista, from flauto, and adopted due to 18th century Italian influence) vs "flutist" is the source of minor dispute among players of the instrument.
The US player and writer Nancy Toff, in her The Flute Book, devotes a page to the subject, commenting that she is asked "Are you a flutist or a flautist?" on a weekly basis.

He subsequently had training as a flautist with Marcel Moyse in both Europe and Vermont intermittently for nine years and studied with Hubert Barwähser in The Netherlands, Severino Gazzelloni in Italy, André Jaunet in Switzerland, and Jean-Pierre Rampal in France, all in 1964-65, on a grant from the Canada Council for the Arts.
His honors as a flautist include prizes in the Paris flute competition (1971) and the new music flute competition in Royan (1972) and an invitation from Pierre Boulez to present a solo recital at IRCAM (1977, one of only twelve instrumentalists chosen), as well as the Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Flute Association (2003).
As a flautist, he served as principal flautist of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra in 1958-59 (the youngest in the orchestra's history), second flautist in the CBC Radio Orchestra from 1960-64 and co-principal flautist of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra from 1965-70.

Am I Flutist, or a Flautist??
In Nancy Toff's essential The Flute Book, she explains that the term flautist is associated with the negative connotations derived from the Latin verb, flaut which means to jeer or mock, which "apparently derives its meaning from the practice of playing a flute to ridicule."
According to the Oxford English Dictionary, the term flautist did not appear in English until 1860, when Nathaniel Hawthorne used it in The Marble Faun.
("The flautist poured his breath in quick puffs of jollity") The frequent use of the word flautist is probably inspired by the Italian terminology, flauto which pervades musical scores.

That premium on performance is the People's Flautist's MO. Sometimes she jumps offstage and storms into the crowd, blowing an unamplified solo right up in our faces, close enough to smell her perfume and hear her frenzied between-note breathing.
It's her way of battling the trends of concertgoers paying $100 a pop to endure synthesizers, bad choreography, and lip-synching nonsense.
She recalls a recent discussion about the strict difference between being an "artist" and a Madonna-class image-driven "star," but she longs for both poles: "I can't help it," she says.

Yes, I'm sure one or two have hugged a Rottweiler, although in Germany, I suspect that is not as common as some other places.
They won't directly say "look we don't want you to have any fun or continue sporting"but they will create a series of legally bound rules ad nauseam,to make your dog owning and showing life etc as miserable as possible.
I know this might sound a bit strange, but I quite honestly think the whole thing started with Germany's acceptance of the Council of Europe's pet animal resolutions that included the tail docking ban.
