Fleet Marine Force is the branch of marines assigned to duty aboard a ship, usually as part of a Marine space ground task force.
Marines are responsible for honor guard, boarding parties (both boarding other ships and defending against other boarding parties), and any other 'brute strength' jobs that the CO might want done.
A marine cannot command a starship, cannot be a doctor (at least assigned to a unit as a doctor), and cannot be a chaplain (or assigned to a unit as one).

With the formation of the Fleet Marine Forces (FMF) replacing the East and West Coast Expeditionary Forces, the aviation components of the newly formed FMF became Aircraft One at Quantico, and Aircraft Two at San Diego.

The force of Marines maintained by the Major General Commandant in a state of readiness for operations with the fleet is hereby designated as Fleet Marine Force (FMF), and as such shall constitute a part of the organization of the United States Fleet and be included in the Operating Force Plan for each fiscal year.
The Fleet Marine Force shall consist of such units as may be designated by the Major General Commandant and shall be maintained at such strength as is warranted by the personnel situation of the Marine Corps.

Qualification for the Navy Fleet Marine Force Ribbon signifies acquisition of specific professional skills, knowledge and military experience that result in qualifications above those normally required of Navy personnel serving with the Fleet Marine Force (FMF).
Navy personnel assigned to a FMF unit who have no Navy Enlisted Classification Code (NEC) producing pipeline school, (i.e., YN, PN, DK, etc.....) are also eligible.
The award of this ribbon shall entitle enlisted personnel to be designated FMF and have two points applied on the E4 through E6 advancement exams.

AL ASAD, Iraq - Nine Sailors with the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing received their Fleet Marine Force Warfare device in a ceremony held here Feb. 3.
Being awarded the FMF warfare pin is a high honor for Sailors because it symbolizes their hard work and dedication to the Marine Corps.

Although corpsmen go back to the very beginning of the Navy, it was over 100 years ago, in June 1898 that the Hospital Corps was officially established.
Corpsmen added luster to their shining performance when they went ashore with the Marines in Korea.
Corpsmen were in Vietnam too, and 690 died there, most while serving with the Fleet Marine Forces and Naval units ashore.

The 3d Marine Regiment was reactivated on 16 June 1942, in North Carolina, as part of the World War II military expansion.  The regiment fought and bled at Bougainville and Guam.  Four medals of Honor were awarded to members of 3d Marines for actions during this period.
Following World War II, the regiment was ordered to China to aid in the disarming of Japanese units and to assist the Nationalist government in the occupation of Northern China in an effort to deny land to the communists.
Following the cease-fire on 28 February 1991, the regiment redeployed to Saudi Arabia and subsequently completed its strategic redeployment to Hawaii two months later.  Effective 1 October 1994, the 1st Marine Brigade was deactivated and 3d Marine Division became the regiment’s higher headquarters.

Surrounding images show the bond between Navy hospital corpsmen and Marines, a bond that Krasovetz knows well from his brother, a hospital corpsmen.

Petty Officer 1st Class Donald E. Farr, a signalman qualified as both a surface and air warfare specialist, was selected as the Sea Sailor of the Year for the Pacific Fleet, during a ceremony recently held at Pearl Harbor Naval Station.
