It was built by the Melbourne and Hobsons Bay Railway, which had been formed in August 1852.
The Melbourne Omnibus Company began operation with 11 horse-drawn buses carrying passengers from the city via Bourke Street to Fitzroy’s Birmingham Hotel, at the corner of Smith and Johnston Streets.
The Victorian Railway Department began on 19 March 1856 after the Government had bailed out the financially troubled railway company as it tried to build another line to Williamstown.

 Puckle Street
The Essendon to North Melbourne Junction railway had been started in the 1850’s and was opened in 1864.
Later, the horse drawn bus service to Flemington Bridge opened from Puckle Street to meet the old cable tram system and ten years later on April 9 1903, the horse drawn cab service replaced the bus.
Puckle Street was fortunate that Moonee Ponds railway station had been built.

Flemington Bridge, a station on the Upfield Rail line, was the original terminus of the privately built tram lines from Essendon in 1906.
This photograph of B2 2095 bound for Airport West was taken in Mt Alexander Road, just north of Flemington Bridge in 1996.
Melbourne SW2 class number 426 has already had its destination sign changed to City' as it waits to proceed to shunt at the Camberwell terminus in Burke Road, at Whitehorse Road in 1976.

The second electric tramway in Melbourne's suburbs was opened on the 11th October 1906 and ran from Flemington Bridge (near the terminus of the North Melbourne cable tram route) to Essendon, with a branch to Saltwater River (Now Maribyrnong River) and a short spur along Puckle St Moonee Ponds, to Moonee Ponds railway station.
The first tramway to operate in Melbourne was an isolated line from Fairfield railway station.
The only steam-operated passenger tramway to operate in Melbourne ran from Cheltenham railway station to the Melbourne Home and Hospital for the Aged, a distance of about one mile.

Work on the system since "the Bourke St job" has been concentrated on relaying tracks in mass concrete, although several additions have been made to the permanent way service tram roster, and three trams have been purchased from the Victorian Railways following closure of their line from St Kilda railway station.
The lease of the cable trams by the Melbourne Tramways and Omnibus Co. expired on 30th June, 1916 and it was decided to appoint an interim Melbourne Tramways Trust to operate the system until it was decided what to do about the growing problems of street passenger transport in the Melbourne metropolitan area.

 Railway - Broadmeadows Line
The station was initially located further north than the current location nearer the point where the original Sydney Road (now Pascoe Vale Road) crossed the railway line.
By 1962 Standard gauge railway track was installed on this line, parallel to the existing broad gauge, at last making it possible for passengers and freight to travel between Melbourne and Sydney without changing trains.
As was quite common at this stage of railway development in the colony the line was constructed and owned by a private syndicate.

 TMSV: History of the North Melbourne Electric Tramway & Lighting Company
When it was pointed out that the planned routes were designed to feed railway stations at four points, the VR commissioners produced a previously unknown scheme for a motor omnibus service operating on the same routes.
This was to build an electric tramway from the MTOC terminus at Flemington Bridge to North Essendon along Mt Alexander Road and Buckley Street.
Melbourne’s third electric tramway was not to suffer the fate of the first two [1] — closure.
