The future of the line was not secured until 1994, with the upgrading of the signalling and level crossings and duplicating track between Merlynston and Gowrie.
Older Comeng and Hitachi rolling stock runs on this line -- the newer Siemens could not originally be run on this line when they were first introduced, as a breakdown requires towing at both ends, something which is impossible because of the single line section past Gowrie.

Eleven through platforms were provided at the station on its completion in 1910 and were vastly different from the original platforms which sported semi-circular verandahs terminated by timber valances and at the west end 'train sheds', embracing both platforms and tracks.
The old Port Melbourne and St Kilda line platform verandah was far too good to throw away, so the department had it dismantled and re-erected at Hawthorn, which in those days, was a much busier station.

The line only has two station and residents who live near the line is close to a tram line.
The idea of the line being extended to Highpoint is ambitious in itself, but not without credibility, and I do think it would attract patronage, not so much for being near the shopping centre, but rather as train services in that area are lacking.
If the line then follows the river, it is avoiding homes just as your line does, at least assuming that there are not homes where you aerial shot doesn't show homes.
