Upfield railway line, Melbourne - Encyclopedia, History, Geography and Biography
The Upfield railway line is a suburban railway in Melbourne, Australia.
The line was in serious doubt in the late 1980s and early 1990s with rumours of the line been converting into light rail or even closure.
The future of the line was not secured until 1994, with the upgrading of the signalling and level crossings and duplicating track between Merlynston and Gowrie.

TMSV: History of the North Melbourne Electric Tramway & Lighting Company
Melbourne’s third electric tramway was not to suffer the fate of the first two [1] — closure.
Unlike the private rail lines operating to the southeast of Melbourne, the company was not soundly based, as it had to lease its equipment from the government-owned Victorian Railways (VR).
The Puckle Street line was closed on 12 January 1924, whilst the original Victoria Street connection between Mt Alexander Road and Racecourse Road was closed on 4 August 1929, being replaced by the current direct Racecourse Road line to Flemington Road.

 Royal Park & Princes Park
Over the years the Melbourne General Cemetery has expanded over a large section of the parkland and the Princes Park stadium, although occupying a relatively small area, becomes the focus of the park when major events are held there.
The area was traversed by a tramline (1920s), and for a short period part of the ill fated circle railway line.
The area on the west of the railway was "out of sight" and over time was used for institutions such as a juvenile detention centre, psychiatric hospital, Commonwealth Serum Laboratories and a number of playing fields.

Land and Environment: Aspendale Park Racecourse
In establishing the racecourse, Crooke sought the assistance of two leading jockeys, Mick O’Brien and Bob Ramage, both of whom had ridden Carbine (‘possibly the greatest horse to grace the Australasian turf’) to success in the 1889 and 1890 Melbourne Cup respectively.[4] O’Brien and Ramage had both ridden with success at Mentone.
The course was close to the Mordialloc-Frankston railway line and as such was approximately seventeen miles from the centre of Melbourne.
It is interesting to note that the racecourse at Aspendale was opened in the Depression of 1893 and that it closed for horse racing in the 1930s Depression.

 The Broadmeadows Railway Line
Today, the Broadmeadows line is a busy Suburban line, but in the early days, when the line terminated at Essendon, freight services were provided to most of these current stations, as they were semi-rural farming locations, rather than suburbs like today.
As the line became more and more busy, a Freight line linking Broadmeadows and Albion was constructed, to bypass the line, and to provide access to the Western rail yards, and later a standard gauge rail link to Sydney.
With the lines configured as they are, this means that trains have to reverse to run via the BMS line, so it is far to difficult to do so.

Trams then pass under the Flemington Racecourse branch railway, then the Royal Melbourne Showgrounds, which hosts the Royal Melbourne Show each September, then turn into Union Rd Ascot Vale and pass a siding provided to store trams for Showgrounds and racecourse events, though it is rarely used these days.
The siding has not felt the weight of a tram for some time and it would be extremely risky to allow anything heavier than a scrubber to enter it.
