Locals swear that when the Tullamarine Freeway was built in the early ’70s, the Country Roads Board promised the people of Flemington that it would provide a pedestrian overpass so they could continue to have access to Royal Park without having to cross Flemington Road.
Spurred on by a downhill stretch parallel with the Upfield railway line, near an interesting geological exposure, we made our way to Moonee Ponds Creek and to one of the main miracles of the Capital City Trail - the footbridge that allows traffic-free passage from Royal Park to the creek.
While the result fell short of his ambitious goal, a series of parks was created around inner Melbourne, and these became the building blocks for the trail and the open-space system it traverses.
