Fletcher returned to Pearl Harbor 9 December 1943 and after a brief overhaul and training on the west coast, was ready for the attack on the Marshalls.
Fletcher took part in the landings at Puerto Princesa, Palawan, and Zamboanga, covered minesweeping and landings at Tarakan, and gave local patrol and escort service in the Philippines until 13 May 1945, when she sailed for a west coast overhaul.

The Fletcher Class of destroyers in the US Navy were the most widely used in any navy during the World War II period.
Earliest Fletchers had a rounded front wheelhouse with open bridge wings and a high gun director; later ones had a squared off wheelhouse with open bridge forward and on both sides; the gun director was also lowered to help alleviate the top heavy tendancy of the class.
The class had one rudder which was too small with earlier ships, but was modified larger to improve turning radius and slow speed maneuvering.

DD-557 USS JOHNSTON was a Fletcher Class Destroyer laid down at the Seattle-Tacoma Shipyard on 6 May 1942 and Commissioned on 27 October 1943.
It is interesting to note that Blue Water Navy decided to re-release their square bridge Fletcher kit in light of the fact that Tamiya currently produces an injected-mold kit of the same class of Destroyer.
The main difference between the two kits is that the Tamiya kit represents the early war round bridge version of Fletcher Class DD and the Blue Water Navy Kit represents the mid-to-late war square bridge version with increased AA fit.
