Flettner Fl 282 "Kolibri" helicopter - development history, photos, technical data
Flettner's first rotorcraft, flown in 1932, had a 2-blade rotor 29.87m in diameter, with a 30hp Anzani engine mounted part of the way along each blade driving a propeller - a form of propulsion similar to that used by the Italian Vittorio Isacco on his so-called 'helicogyros' developed in the U.S.S.R. in the 1930s.
The Fl 185 was a gyroplane equipped with a three-blade rotor; torque balance was achieved by means of variable-pitch pusher propellers driven by extension shafts located at the ends of outriggers mounted on each side of the fuselage.
Flettner's improved helicopter was the two-seat Fl 282 Kolibri (Hummingbird), and to speed the development of an aircraft that could prove valuable for naval use, a total of 30 prototypes and 15 pre-production examples were ordered in early 1940.

Flettner also made several improvements to military tanks, and he apparently designed a guided torpedo which was never built.
Flettner also removed the autogyro's main propeller and replaced it with two smaller propellers on outriggers located on the side.
The Fl 282 is most notable for pioneering the Naval use of helicopters, particularly for hunting submarines.

Flettner's first rotorcraft, flown in 1932, had a 2-blade rotor 100ft in diameter, with a 30hp Anzani engine mounted part of the way along each blade driving a propeller - a form of propulsion similar to that used by the Italian Vittorio Isacco on his so-called 'helicogyros' developed in the U.S.S.R. in the 1930s.
The RLM therefore agreed to wait for the Fl 282, to hasten whose development it ordered thirty prototypes and fifteen pre-production aircraft in spring 1940.The maiden flight was made in 1941.
The Fl 282 was designed so the rotor blades and landing gear could be removed and the helicopter stored in a compact area such as the pressure tank of a U-boat.

 Flettner Fl 282 History
The innovative Flettner Fl 282 was one of the first (if not the first) operational helicopter that was used on board of ships.
Being the successor of the Flettner Fl 265 which first flew in May 1939, the Flettner 282 was only build in small numbers, 30 prototypes and 15 pre production vehicles were completed.
At the end of the war, only three Flettner Fl 282 were still operational and none of this remarkable aircraft survived until today.

The Flettner Fl 282 was a development of the Flettner Fl 265 dating from 1938.
The fuel tank was than removed from the centre and moved to the sides so that a passenger/observer could take place in the hull facing the rear and with his head under the propellers.
The Flettner also has a tubular frame at the front and for its landing gear and the removal from the sprues as well as the cleanup of those parts is very delicate and demands extreme precautions.

One such visionary was Anton Flettner, whose development of a series of helicopters intended for naval use began in earnest in 1935 with the opening of his Berlin-Johannisthal factory.
This was the first successful use of twin intermeshing counter-rotating rotor blades, but a single seat aft of the transmission and the engine mounted in the nose combined to make this a less than ideal type for full service.
A direct development of the earlier Fl-265, the 282 was a neat little machine, using Anton Flettner’s revolutionary rotor system to produce a stable helicopter unencumbered by a complex tail rotor mechanism.

 Kamen K-225
In Germany during World War II, Anton Flettner had originally pioneered the intermeshing rotor configuration when he designed and flew the Flettner Fl 282 helicopter.
After the war, the concept migrated to the United States and picked up the nickname 'synchropter.' Kaman believed that intermeshing, counter-rotating rotors were more efficient for certain types of helicopters than the single main/tail rotor designs pioneered by Igor Sikorsky during the war.
The K-190 was nimble enough to demonstrate aerobatic maneuvers that most other helicopters of that era could not perform but it was also underpowered and Kaman soon designed an improved model designated the K-225.
