 | | The fleur de lis first appears in French heraldry in 1199 as a rebus on a seal of the town of Lille(10), Nord, although another view is that it made its first official appearance on a seal dated 1211 of Louis, later to be Louis VIII, son of Philippe-Auguste(11). |
 | | One theory is that the original fleur de lis was the head of a weapon known as the javelot or francisque, which later came to be used as a sceptre, and then as the French arms(3). |
 | | In a decree of Louis VII of 1147, the fleur de lis is connected with the monarchy, and at his coronation in 1179 Philippe-Auguste wore a robe of azure semy de lis. |
