Day 3 and we start with a visit to Fort Douaumont, which fell on the 25th February after a tremendous artillery bombardment, but in slightly farcical circumstances.
Close to Douaumont and the Ossuary is the fort Ouvrage de Froidterre, like the rest of the area it was subjected to an incredible artillery bombardment, and the land still bears the scars.
East of Douaumont was Fort Vaux which fell on the 7th June.

Von Falkenhayn's army never recovered from being halted there, and never reached the town of Verdun: although they did succeed in crossing the river valley some way to the north, by then it was far too late to take the advantage and their advance westwards effectively ended here.
Just past the crossroads I stopped at the «Mémorial de Fleury», now a museum dedicated to those battles and the subsequent reconstruction.
There were a number of ways to go from here, but I continued along the same road which turned past the «Ossuaire de Douaumont».

photo is of the Ossuaire and cemetery at Douaumont near Verdun, a place reached along a country road quite peaceful now, but punctuated by trenches dug on either side.
The trenches are sign posted, and we vividly remember the one named "British Communications Trench", curving away from the road through the woods.
It is here you will see the weapons, munitions and uniforms of World War I, as well as see and hear the story of the battles in the region.

A few days ago I posted some photographs that Lewis Michaels shot while in Verdun, the site of one of the costliest battles of World War I.  Today, I’m posting some of my own photos from Verdun.  A map of the area shows the locations of Douaumont and Fleury.
The Verdun Memorial is a museum that depicts the devastation that was wrought on the area during the battle at Verdun.  The museum includes artifacts from World War I, dioramas depicting the battle, and audio-video presentations about the War.
In front of the Douaumont Ossuary is the French National Cemetery.  Some 15,000 French soldiers are buried here in graves marked by a white cross with a nameplate and a rose planted in front of the cross.  Muslim soldiers are buried under a gravestone facing towards Mecca.
