Flexor digitorum profundus muscle - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In human anatomy, the flexor digitorum profundus is a muscle in the forearm that flexes the fingers.
Flexor digitorum profundus, along with flexor digitorum superficialis have long tendons that run down the arm and through the carpal tunnel and attach to the palmar side of the phalanges of the fingers.
Flexor digitorum profundus is innervated by the median and ulnar nerves.

The flexor digitorum profundis is a muscle in the forearm that flexes the fingers.
Flexor digitorum profundis, along with flexor digitorum superficialis have long tendons that run down the arm and through the carpal tunnel that attach to the palmar side of the phalanges of the fingers.
It is one of the two flexor muscles of the forearm that are not supplied by the median nerve.

The superficial flexor muscles all arise from a common tendon attached to the medial epicondyle of the humerus, known as the common flexor attachment.
All of the flexor muscle, except for the brachioradialis (which is supplied by the radial nerve), are supplied by the median and ulnar nerve.
The remaining nine muscles are all extensors and are all innervated by the radial nerve.

Flexor digitorum superficialis—this muscle flexes (flexor) the fingers/digits (digitorum) and is the outer one of two muscles that do this (superficialis).
Flexor digitorum profundus—this muscle also flexes the fingers, but it is in the deepest layer, right against the ulna and radius.

Re: If I bend my pinky, why does my ring finger bend too?
General finger flexion is controlled by three groups of musclesflexor digitorum superficialis and flexor digitorum profundus and the lumbricals.
Flexor digitorum superficialis crosses only the first two joints and so cannot flex the distal interphalangeal joint.
The lumbricals arise from the tendons of the flexor digitorum profundus muscle but insert onto the common extensor sheath of the extensor digitorum muscle.

The FDS is the largest superficial muscle in the forearm and inserts on the palmar surface of the middle phalanges.
The flexor tendons are particularly susceptible to injury during the cling and pocket grips (2,6).

The soleus and extensor digitorum longus muscles of the hindlimb and the flexor digitorum profundus muscle of the forelimb were studied in ad libitum-fed control and age-matched diet-restricted male rats at various ages from weaning to senescence.
The capillary: fibre ratio and the capillary density were correlated with muscle fibre size in both hindlimb muscles.
Although capillarity increased with age, expected differences between fast and slow muscles were probably minimised by the high proportion of FOG fibres in the extensor digitorum longus.

The manus was extremely small and difficult to dissect.  The abductor pollicis brevis muscle was prominent on the medial (radial) side of the hand.  The abductor digiti minimi muscle was visible on the lateral (ulnar) side of the hand.
The flexor group originates from the medial epicondyle of the humerus and serves to flex the wrist and fingers.  While M.

Flexor tendon lacerations in the finger frequently involve the division of one or both neurovascular bundles on the volar-lateral aspects of the fingers.
When primary repair is not possible, the flexor mechanism is best reconstructed by a free tendon graft which extends from the distal phalanx to an anastomosis with the profundus tendon at a point proximal to the metacarpophalangeal pulley.
The muscle belly is then reflected laterally, the median and musculocutaneous nerves are identified and the anterior fascia of the brachialis is released.

INJURIES TO THE HAND   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
The extensor tendon may be injured by a blow to the tip of the finger, forcing the distal interphalangeal joint into flexion and rupturing or partially rupturing the extensor tendon slip at the point of its insertion into the base of the terminal phalanx.
This type of injury is characterized by pain, swelling, and tenderness at the distal interphalangeal joint, as well as the inability of the athlete to actively flex at this joint while the proximal and middle finger joints are held straight.
Rupture or avulsion of the flexor digitorum profundus tendon from its attachment to the distal phalanx, is caused by a sudden extension of the DIP (distal interphalangeal) joint while held in flexion.

Flexor muscle - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A flexor muscle is a skeletal muscle whose contraction bends a joint, decreasing the angle between components of a limb, such as bending the knee or elbow.
The type of muscle that has the opposite effect is the extensor muscle, which opens a joint, increasing the angle between limb components.
