The Sword of Shannara - Chapter One
Flick listened intently, and once he thought he heard a sharp cry far to the north, but an instant later it was gone, and he did not hear it again.
Flick glanced at his companion and saw that he was not looking through the brush at the country around them, but instead was peering upward where the night sky was visible in small, irregular patches through the foliage.
Flick also pulled up a chair and sat down, his eyes still on the stranger, who was in the process of complimenting his father on having such a fine inn.

Flick Ohmsford - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Flick Omsford is one of the main characters in The Sword of Shannara, a fantasy novel by Terry Brooks.
Although he is deeply devoted to his brother, they have quite different personalities as Flick can be somewhat sarcastic and pessimistic at times.
Though at first feeling quite useless in comparison to the other members of the party, Flick eventually exhibits resourcefulness and courage and distinguishes himself by saving the life of the Elven King, Eventine Elessedil.

Flick was particularly disturbed by the unnatural silence of the Duln, a silence strange to this huge forest-but uncomfortably familiar to the stocky Valeman.
Flick was unwilling to enter into the conversation, resisting the temptation he felt to elaborate on his own part in the events of the past few weeks.
Flick frowned; recalling how on their last visit to Leah, Menion had succeeded in losing them for several days in the dreaded forest, where they were menaced by wolves and ravaged by hunger.

But Flick liked to travel outside the valley from time to time, and the outlying homesteads were in need of his services and were willing to pay him for the trouble.
Flick's father was not one to let an opportunity pass him by where there was money to be made, and the arrangement seemed to work out well for all concerned.
Flick could see the fellow more clearly now, and a quick scrutiny of him revealed that he was definitely human, though much larger than any man Flick had ever seen.

This dangerous looking man claims to be searching for Flick’s brother, with information that is vital to the survival of the world.
Under constant threat of the Warlock Lord, Shea, Flick, and a group of adventurers must reach the druid’s keep known as Paranor, and reach the Sword of Shannara before the Warlock Lord has a chance to sick his unstoppable army onto this world.

Flick Ohmsford—a Valeman and Shea’s brother, he was the first person to meet Allanon, who informed him and Shea of the looming danger to the Four Lands.
At Paranor, Flick became separated from the rest of the company as he watched Allanon do battle with the Skull Bearer; this separation proved to be useful, however, as Flick prevented himself from getting trapped in the room where the Sword of Shannara was supposed to be.
Flick was able to rescue Eventine, so, leaving the Valeman in the company of the Elves, Allanon traveled to the Northland in an attempt to find Shea and to advise him on using the Sword.

The sun was already sinking into the deep green of the hills to the west of the valley, the red and gray-pink of its shadows touching the corners of the land, when Flick Ohmsford began his descent.
The trail stretched out unevenly down the northern slope, winding through the huge boulders which studded the rugged terrain in massive clumps, disappearing into the thick forests of the lowlands to reappear in brief glimpses in small clearings and thinning spaces of woodland.
The familiar buzzing and chirping of insects normally present in the quiet of the night, the cries of the birds that awoke with the setting of the sun to fly in search of food -- all were missing.

A crack team of adventurers was assembled (sound familiar?) consisting of Hendel (dwarf), Durin and Dayel (elven brothers), Shea and Flick (the Ohmsford brothers), Allanon (the Gandalf-like Druid), Balinor (the equivilent of Aragorn), and Menion Leah.
The Ohmsfords - we hear of them in Elfstones, but they have become doddering old men, suspicious of Allanon (at least Flick is) and apparently have no more adventurous spirit left in them.
The wilfull son, who I did not care for at first, is Jair Ohmsford, possessor of a strange offspring of the magic his father wielded in the previous novel - the Elfstones have worked their way into the DNA (I suppose) of the family.

(There is not; Flick is alone at this point, except for the omnipresent camera eye.) What we have is a purely subjective and fanciful opinion about Flick’s character, passed off as physical description and therefore as fact.
She would know it was an opinion, no more reliable or well-informed than the person who made it, and from this she could learn not only about Flick but about his observer, and the relationship between them.
