  USS Flier (SS-250) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
USS Flier (SS-250), a Gato-class submarine, was the only ship of the United States Navy to be named for the flier, a round sunfish widely known in the United States.
Flier put in to Fremantle, Australia, to refit between 5 July 1944 and 2 August, then sailed on her second war patrol, bound for the coast of Indochina via the Lombok Strait, Macassar Strait and Balabac Strait.
Flier received one battle star for World War II service on her single war patrol, designated "successful." She is credited with having sunk 10,380 tons of Japanese shipping.

On the night of 30 August the survivors from FLIER embarked in two small boats, and, having made their way safely around a Japanese merchant ship anchored near the rendezvous point, were picked up by REDFIN early in the morning of 31 August.
FLIER's first patrol was conducted west of Luzon in June 1944.
She sank four freighters, and damaged a fifth freighter and a tanker for 19,500 tons sunk and 13,500 tons damaged.

Flier reached Pearl Harbor from New London 20 December 1943, and prepared for her first war patrol, sailing 12 January 1944.

Submarine Centennial history: Aug. 13, 1944 USS Flier (SS 250) struck a mine as it transited the Balabac Strait in the Philippines and sank.
Friendly natives guided them to a "coast watcher" who arranged for them to be picked up by USS Redfin (SS 272).
A total of 78 men from USS Flier were lost.

It brought back many a fond memory of the incident.
It came as a surprise to me and I'll always cherish the same.

The best items they have are the 2 Russian DDGs and 4 Russian SS - the only truly survivable ships in their force, either because of difficulty finding them or difficulty penetrating their defense umbrella.
And they also have 20 or more old SS, obsolete for fighting warships but able to lay mines or go after civilian shipping.
There escorts are 3x48, 5x44, 3x20, 3x4 (trainers), 9 Kilo SS (same as best Chinese SS), 4 German SS (smaller but quieter), plus 1 jeep CVE with 12 Harrier and ~30 other escorts and missle boats without modern air defense.
