The biggest story in comics over the past week has to be the unfortunate passing of Mike Wieringo last weekend.
How he died (considering his lifestyle), his young age, and the whole he left in the comic industry with his passing were a total system shock that some still aren't able to fully digest.

Comic Book Resources - CBR News: Scott Kolins Gets Ready To Soar With "Omega Flight"
Unfortunately, Alpha Flight recently met its end in the pages of Marvel Comics' "New Avengers," seemingly leaving only the Mounties and that guy from "Due South" to protect the country.
Thought Alpha Flight has always been a well-known team since their debut in "Uncanny X-Men," and their self-titled series by John Byrne drew quite a bit of acclaim, it's always seemed as though 'Flight never quite made the top tier of Marvel's superhero team hierarchy.
Some old school "Alpha Flight" fans have been worried about the sweeping changes to the team, namely the death of much of the old cast and a very unusual new cast in "Omega Flight," concerns that Kolins understands.

The large comic book publishers all have extensive full-color sections in the front of Previews, while the smaller publishers were buried in thousands of solicitations along with all sorts of ‘pop culture’ items, video’s, posters, action figures, superman flavored lipstick, games, and trading cards.
I was looking seriously at expanding the ‘distribution’ part of the comic book business (buying other people’s books and selling them to the network of retailers that we were working with), I was slowly developing a boardgame, and we were preparing to go on an extensive convention tour of the country.
Having only put together comic books in the past, most of the issues of board game graphic work and manufacturing were new to me. During the ordeal, I became quite adept at "Macromedia Freehand" after designing at least 35 different spaceships for the 6 races in TI (and 2 more races for the Borderlands).

The idea for the story came to me on the flight over from Toronto, and as I was hanging out in the LA area with Kazu and some of the Flight crew for a week, they certainly influenced and helped me tighten up my story as I was working on it.
Dave: I think the potential for Flight to have an even bigger life outside the comic book marketplace was, and still is, really exciting to me. But it didn't affect my actual storytelling, since I had worked out most of the script long before I knew about the change in publishers.
Kazu: The shift to a more storybook feel for Flight 3 seems to be a reflection of a certain nostalgia and innocence on the part of the creators, and as Kean said, Tony Cliff did set a strong example with his story.

And their gamma-spawned monster hero was all wrong: he wasn’t slick and green; he was furry and orange.
