Executive Summary: On June 2, 1983, Air Canada Flight 797, a McDonnell Douglas DC-9-32, of Canadian Registry C-FTLU, was a regularly scheduled international passenger flight from Dallas, Texas, to Montreal, Quebec, Canada, with an en route stop at Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
As the pilot stopped the airplane, the airport fire department, which had been alerted by the tower to the fire on board the incoming plane, was in place and began firefighting operations.
While 18 passengers and three flight attendants exited through the forward doors and slides and the three open overwing exits to evacuate the airplane, the captain and first officer exited through their respective cockpit sliding windows.

Reasonable people may disagree about the need for arming pilots to protect the flight deck, but we are convinced that very strong arguments can be made in favor of creating the program outlined in the Young/Mica bill.
It is worth noting that the respected airline, El Al, uses two doors on all of its aircraft to protect the flight deck, along with a team of air marshals on each flight and an armed guard who protects an entrance zone in front of the door near the passengers.
Flight deck-specific Fire Arms Training Scenarios (FATS) should be created to provide virtual shoot/no-shoot exercises to help teach the student judgment concerning use of the weapon.

The flight had not been previously coordinated, so the radar controller searched for and found the flight data strip in the pending bay, annotated it as required, and posted it in the active traffic bay.
As well, the flight had been assigned an SSR code in United States airspace; the code was not held in the Toronto flight plan data base.
The provision of attentive flight monitoring to active traffic on the radar display is jeopardized when a controller is performing the duties of both the data controller and the radar controller.
