On September 11, 2001, the aircraft on the flight was one of four planes hijacked as part of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
The flight route designation for future flights on the same route was renumbered from Flight 93 to Flight 81 in October 2001 out of respect for those who died.

9-11 Research: Flight 93   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-23)
United Airlines Flight 93 was the plane that crashed in Pennsylvania, short of its alleged target, the Capital.
Flight 93 was a Boeing 757-200 on a scheduled flight from Newark to San Francisco, with 38 passengers, five flight attendants, and two pilots.
At 10:06 AM, Flight 93 was apparently shot down near Somerset, PA. The official story that it was flown into the ground as a result of a struggle to control the cockpit is contradicted by the reports of eyewitnesses on the ground, as well as the phone call attributed to Edward Felt.

Flight 93: Forty lives, one destiny
Flight 93 became an asterisk to a day of horror that claimed almost 5,000 lives, toppled buildings that stood like a twin Colossus on the New York shore, took down one side of the Pentagon, and ushered in a war without rules against an enemy without a state.
What made Flight 93 different was a decision reached somewhere over the skies of Western Pennsylvania, after passengers learned on cell phones that they were likely to be flown into a building as the fourth in a quartet of suicide attacks.
The night before boarding Flight 93, in their hotel rooms, Jarrah would have opened a list of instructions, kept in a notebook that apparently was written by his old friend Atta.

 PARANOIA - Flight 93
Flight recorders, seismologists, air traffic controllers, and utility companies all depend upon the accuracy of their clocks tremendously, and even use tools such as satellites to keep errors to a minimum.
The possibility is that United Flight 93 crashed as a result of being attacked by a high-powered microwave weapon, most likely fired from the C-130 aircraft acknowledged by the Department of Defense to be present that morning.
One early argument against a shoot-down scenario regarding Flight 93 was that it would be impossible to keep secret, and too risky to try; anyone on the ground could be holding a camcorder these days, and could inadvertently capture the image of a missile streaking towards the airliner.

Flight 93 Movie Review at Hollywood Video
Released on DVD just days after United 93 opened in theaters, A&E Television Network's Flight 93 is a respectful, solidly made-for-television drama that unfolds with sickening dread towards the inevitable conclusion.
What follows is both harrowing and heartbreaking, as Flight 93 cuts back and forth between the hijacked plane and the ground, where the passengers' families and federal officials can do little except watch in horror as the plane veers fatally off course.
The scenes depicting the hijackers' takeover of Flight 93 are difficult to watch, yet the most powerful moments are the passengers' final cell phone calls to their anguished loved ones.

The winning design for the Flight 93 memorial ‘Crescent of Embrace’ is extravagant, wasteful and ultimately does not convey the spirit of the resistance and defiance of the passengers who made the ultimate sacrifice that their plane would not be used to attack their own countrymen.
